RIVERSIDE, CA – The No. 24-ranked Long Beach State softball team defeated UC Riverside 5-0 in the regular season finale at Harrison field on Saturday, behind a three-hit shut out from freshman Jennifer Martinez.
The victory marked the 39th of the year for Long Beach State and its 19th in conference play. In fact the 19-2 conference record is the best mark in school history. The 49ers have won 22 of their last 24 games. LBSU has posted a 54-8 record in conference play since 2003.
Long Beach State also broke the single-season runs record (242) after posting five this afternoon.
Martinez earned her first career victory in the circle after allowing just three hits in seven innings with four strikeouts. Lacy Tyler went 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs and an RBI, while Jessica Beaver went 1-for-3 with a home run.
Long Beach State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Lauren Johnson reached base on a bunt single to start things off. Beaver then reached safely on a fielder's choice to advance Johnson to second base. A wild pitch allowed Beaver and Johnson to advance to second and third base. Oli Keohohou then hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Johnson and Marcel Torres reached on a fielder's choice which brought home Beaver.
The 49ers tacked on another run in the third when Beaver connected for her second home run of the season to left field, and added another in the fifth when Melanie McCauley singled to left field to score Tyler.
Tyler notched her fourth home run of the season with a solo shot to left field to close out the game.
