49ers Fall To Washington In NCAA's Beach Finishes Season At 15-11 May 13, 2005 LOS ANGELES, CA-- The Long Beach State women's tennis team dropped its opening round match of the NCAA Tournament on Friday, falling to the No. 25-ranked University of Washington by a score of 4-0. The Huskies improved to 15-8 overall while the No. 59-ranked 49ers finished their season at 15-11. The 49ers were appearing in the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year but fell on the same court as they did in 2004 when they lost to UCLA.
The Huskies got the first point of the day by winning two of the three doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles, Dinka Hadzic and Dea Sumantri, who are rnaked No. 60 in the country, defeated the 49er duo of Nicole Bouffler and Sandra Rocha 8-3. At No. 2 doubles the 49ers won 8-4 as Alanah Carroll and Rachael Porsz defeated Mugette Ahn and Saskia Nauenberg. Tied at 3-3, the 49ers won the next three games to take a 6-3 lead and then finished with the 8-4 victory. The clinching match was at No. 3 doubles where the Huskies Monika Kolbovic and Tara Simpson won 8-4 over Stephanie Bengson and Krystina Katayama. The match was tied 4-4 before the Huskies took control winning the final four games.
In singles play the Huskies controlled all six matches, winning the first set in all six. In order of finish, Simpson won at No. 4 singles over Porsz by a score of 6-2, 6-2. Sumantri, who is ranked No. 18 nationally in singles, defeated Bouffler at the No. 1 singles spot 6-2, 6-2. The Huskies clinched the match at No. 3 singles as Nauenberg defeated Rocha 7-5, 6-2. The three other matches did not finish, but Washington had won the first set in all three.
Long Beach State was making its third NCAA Tournament appearance all-time and it's third in the last four years. The 49ers won Big West Championships in 2002, 2004 and 2005 and have participated in the championship match of the conference tournament five consecutive years.
