USC Gets by The Beach 8-6
LOS ANGELES, CA-- In a game that came down to offensive execution, No. 2-ranked USC (16-3, 7-1 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) scored six times on penalties, while visiting No. 5-ranked Long Beach State (15-5, 7-2 MPSF) scored half as many, as the Women of Troy got by The Beach 8-6 on Saturday afternoon. Lauren Wenger led USC with three goals, while Robyn Gordin converted two goals for the 49ers. "We looked very tentative on offense today," said Head Coach Ricardo Azevedo, whose team was 3-for-10 on 6-on-5 chances for the day. "Our defense was fine and our execution was there in the fact that we got 10 opportunites, but we did not put the shots away." The Women of Troy scored their first six goals on penalties, while LBSU struggled offensively, missing eight of their first nine power-play opportunties, including a string of six straight midway through the contest. Despite this, LBSU twice cut the lead to two goals in the fourth period, only to see USC counter with a goal of their own each time keep the 49ers at bay. A goal by Jeanine Jackson to start the fourth quarter, cut the lead to 6-4 with 4:22 left but Wenger's third goal of the day, at 3:59, gave USC a three-goal advantage. Gordin tallied her second score of the afternoon at 3:31, but Brittany Hayes scored the second of her two goals at 1:51 to put the contest out of reach. LBSU began the game strong, tying the game at 1-1 on an Alison Braden goal at 5:15, but then watched USC take a 4-2 lead at the break as the Trojans scored four of the next five goals to lead 6-2 with 2:49 left in the third period. All six of the goals were because of a 49er penalty. The 49ers are next in action when they host their annual tournament next Saturday and Sunday. Sunday will mark the final home matches for seven seniors. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
