Water Polo Inks Three Players for 2005-06 LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State head men's and women's water polo coach Ricardo Azevedo announced that Joe Sherrin (Long Beach/Wilson HS), Jeff Greenwood (La Serna/La Serna HS), and Kim Hayes (Westminster/Rosary HS/Long Beach City College) have all signed National Letters of Intent for the 2005-06 seasons. Sherrin continues the 49er tradition of bringing in top players from prep powerhouse down the street, Wilson High, as the 5-10 defender was a three-time All-CIF pick in leading the Bruins to four-straight CIF titles. He earned second team accolades as a junior and was a first team selection as a senior. In his junior year he was named to the Press-Telegram's Dream Team after scoring 33 goals and adding 55 assists. Serrin was also a two-time pre-All-American and a member of the U.S. National Cadet Team. "Joe is one of the premier defenders in his class and is also a tremendous offensive player," said Azevedo, a former Bruin himself as was both his children, Tony and Cassie. "He's a team player and made a difference on his Wilson High teams." At 6-9, Greenwood will fill the 2-meter position for The Beach after being named All-CIF in each of the past two seasons, including a first team honor in 2004. He is also a three-time all-league selection and a prep All-American. The two-sport star was also a league MVP in both basketball and water polo. "Jeff is a difficult player to defend," said Azevedo. "He has a good understanding of the game and reminds me a lot of some of the great 2-meter men we have had here at Long Beach State." Hayes comes to The Beach after leading LBCC to back-to-back state championships. In 2004, Hayes was named a first team Alll-American, first team All-State and first team all-conference. She was a second team all-conference selection as a freshman. The Vikings went 61-2 in her two seasons in goal. "Kim comes from two great programs with strong traditions at Long Beach City and at Rosary High," said Azevedo. "I expect her to come in right away and to compete for a starting job at goalkeeper next season."
