49ers Ranked No. 3 For First Time

49ers Ranked No. 3 in the Nation LONG BEACH, CA-- For the first time in school-history Long Beach State women's water polo is ranked No. 3 in the country. The 49ers moved ever closer to the top spot nationally with an upset of then-No. 3-ranked Stanford 7-6 last Sunday. The 49ers at 10-3 and a perfect 3-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation have been ranked No. 4 nationally in each of the past three seasons. LBSU began this year ranked No. 5, but have upset both No. 4 Loyola Marymount and No. 3 Stanford to move up to its current ranking. The 49ers travel to Tempe, AZ for two games this weekend, when they play No. 9-ranked Indiana on Saturday at 4 p.m. and at Arizona State on Sunday at noon. The 49ers are paced by Cassie Azevedo and her 27 goals, which ranks sixth in the country. Azevedo scored five goals this past weekend in wins over San Jose State and Stanford. Robyn Gordin (Cerritos) has 14 goals and Drue Wawrzynski (Los Alamitos) and Alison Braden (Calgary, Alberta) round out the scoring with 11 goals a piece. Braden scored the eventual game winning goal with 1:23 left in the fourth to lead The Beach to a victory over Stanford. The 49er defense ranks 10th in the country, allowing just over five goals a game. Bri Hawkins ranks eighth in the nation with 98 total saves as she continues to add to her school-record with 720 career saves. TOP-10 COLLEGIATE WATER POLO POLL |
