Long Beach Beats Stanford
LONG BEACH, CA -- Alison Braden's second goal of the game, at 1:32 in the fourth quarter help lift the Long Beach State women's water polo team to a 7-6 win over Stanford on Sunday afternoon at the Campus Pool. The Beach, which is ranked No.4 in the country, improved to 10-3 overall and 3-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF). Stanford, No. 3 in the nation, fell to 10-3 and 2-1 in the MPSF. Braden and Cassie Azevedo both tallied two goals for the 49ers, while Jessica Levin, Robyn Gordin and Tara Campbell scored one each. Laurel Champion scored two goals for Stanford. Trailing 6-4 after a Hannah Luber goal at 4:54 in the fourth quarter, the 49ers turned up their offense and defense. Long Beach scored on three consecutive possessions to win the game. Levin got things going with a goal at 4:14 off a goalie save deflection right in front of the Cardinal goal. Gordin followed at 3:09 with a goal, before Braden found the back of the net with 1:32 left. Stanford had two opportunities after the 49ers took the lead, but one shot was deflected by a 49er in the field and the second shot sailed high over the cage. "Yesterday we created opportunities, but we weren't converting," said 49er head Coach Ricardo Azevedo, referring to Saturday's 6-3 win over San Jose State. "Then today we did covert on our opportunities. We made the right passes and the right shots. I was very happy with the performance of our players off the bench. They were able to give our starters a break and we were fresh in the fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter our defense really picked it up. That was the difference. We never game them an open look at the cage." Stanford jumped to a quick 2-0 lead in the first quarter on goals by Champion (4:16) and Christina Hewko (3:25). The 49ers first goal of the day came at 3:08 as Azevedo scored the first of two goals. Azevedo's second goal tied the game at 3-3 at 2:55 in the second quarter before Champion gave the Cardinal a 4-3 halftime lead with a goal at 1:59. The 49ers hit the road next weekend when they play Indiana on Saturday, March 12 at 4 pm in Tempe, AZ. Long Beach then will play Arizona State on Sunday at 12 pm. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
