49ers Head to UC Irvine on Saturday Full Statistics 49ERS HIT THE ROAD FOR TWO WEEKS: The No. 5-ranked 49er women's water polo team (4-1, 0-0 MPSF), winners of four of their last five, will begin a two-week road trip this Saturday when they travel to UC Irvine (3-2, 1-0 MPSF) for the first conference match up of the season. Game time is at 12 p.m. This weekend will mark a two week road trip for the team, as they travel to the expanded three-day UC Santa Barbara Tournament starting on February 25. LBSU returns home March 5 and 6. BEACH TAKES CARE OF UC SAN DIEGO: Paced by Cassie Azevedo's three goals, including two in the final frame, The Beach outscored the Tritons 4-0 in the final period to come away with a 9-4 victory over UC San Diego. Drue Wawrzynski added two goals. RUNNING THE SHIP: The 49ers are under the leadership of sixth-year Head Coach Ricardo Azevedo, who has led The Beach to No. 4 national rankings in each of the past three seasons and an overall record of 102-67. The Beach have produced back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time in school history, going 21-9 last season after going 24-8 in 2003. Azevedo, who also coaches the men's team, was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation's co-Coach of the Year in 2003. NATIONAL LEADERBOARDS: With 10 goals this season junior Cassie Azevedo (Long Beach) is tied for 19th in the nation in scoring, at The Beach as a whole are tied for 10th in the country at scoring at just about seven goals per game. Defensively the 49ers have the sixth-best opponent scoring average in the country. Full national statistics are available at the longbeachstate.com website. SECOND HALF BLITZ: So far this season Long Beach State definitely knows how to put a team away, especially in the second half, outscoring opponents 24-to-15 over the final 14 minutes. The team's defensive pressure has allowed four or fewer second half goals four times, including just one against UC San Diego and two against San Diego State (both wins). WAWRZYNSKI POWERS HER WAY AT 2-METER: Senior 2-meter Drue Wawrzynski (Los Alamitos) is currently second on the team with six goals this season, but outside the national top-30, tallying 121 in her four-year career. Wawrzynski is shooting 35 percent on the season with 11 earned ejections. LEVIN PROVES HER CONSISTENCY: Starting 2-meter (d) Jessica Levin (Seal Beach) as been as consistent as they come to start the season, tallying a goal in the last four games and shooting a team-best 57 percent from the pool. Levin played in all 30 games off the bench last season tallying 12 goals after transferring from San Jose State. HAWKINS CLOSING IN ON 650 CAREER SAVES: Senior goalie Bri Hawkins (San Diego), who has allowed just under six goals a game this season for the sixth-rated defense in the country tallying 28 saves on the year. In her four-year career, Hawkins has 648 career saves, far and away the most saves in school-history. |
