The Record: Long Beach State heads to Northern California for three games this weekend. The Beach is 15-12 overall and 0-4 in the MPSF. On Friday the 49ers tangle with UC Davis (15-12) in a non-conference affair. Saturday the 49ers take on Pacific (15-9/1-3) and on Sunday, California (18-4/4-1).
The Coach: Rick Azevedo is 105-90 (.538) in his seventh year as the head coach at Long Beach State. He picked up win No. 100 on September 24 in an 11-3 win over Air Force.
The Series: The 49ers lead in their series with UC Davis by a 13-2 count. The two met on Sept. 24 at the UC Santa Cruz Slugfest and the 49ers triumphed 14-9. The 49ers lead their series with Pacific by a 45-17 margin, including a 9-7 win on Sept. 17 at the SoCal Tournament. Cal leads its series with the 49ers by a 62-6 count. The Bears defeated the 49ers 9-8 on Oct. 15 at the NorCal Tournament. Cal has won the last five meetings.
So Close: Of the 12 losses this season, six have been by one goal and two by two goals. On the opposite end, the 49ers have won just one game by one goal (11-10 over Navy) and three times by two goals. The Beach is 1-6 in games decided by one goal.
Brett McCleave: Senior Brett McCleave (Lake Forest) continues to pace the 49er offense this season. McCleave has tallied 63 goals this year, an average of 2.33 goals per game. He ranks second in the MPSF at 2.33 goals per game and his 63 total goals leads all players. McCleave has scored in 26 of the 27 games this year and has hit double digits in goals 19 times. McCleave is No. 17 on the 49er career goals scored chart with 113 goals.
Jay Gerardi: Junior Jay Gerardi (Long Beach, CA) seems to play his best against the top teams. On Oct. 29 he tallied three goals against USC and then followed that up with a career-high tying four goals this past Sunday vs. UCLA. Gerardi has 40 goals this year, tying him for second on the team. His 1.48 goal per game average ranks tied for No. 13 in the MPSF. With 78 career goals scored, he now ranks No. 25 on the 49er chart. He previously scored four goals on October 8 vs. Princeton and has 12 multiple-goal games this season.
Thomas Onyshko: Senior goalie Thomas Onyshko (Simi Valley) took over the No. 1 spot in career saves at the NorCal Tournament as he recorded 35 saves in the four games. Onyshko set the mark on October 15 against Cal. Onyshko currently has 776 career saves, breaking the previous mark of 724 set by Brian Flint (1984-86). He has tallied 210 saves this season for a 7.78 save per game average. Onyshko ranks third in the MPSF in saves per game. He has hit double digits in saves eight times.
Brad Scoles: Senior Brad Scoles (Ashland, OR) has played in every game in his three-plus years at Long Beach State, 119 appearances in the pool. He has been in the starting lineup in 103 of those contests. Scoles has 36 goals scored this year and 106 in his 49er career (No. 18 all-time).
MPSF Stats: The 49ers are ranked second in the MPSF in scoring at 10.52 goals per game, trailing No. UCLA who averages 10.55 goals per outing. Individually, Brett McCleave is second in scoring at 2.33 goals per game, Jay Gerardi and Erik Geoffroy are tied for 13th at 1.48, Brad Scoles is 19th at 1.33 and Reid Tomassi and Stefan Ludecke are tied for 28th at 1.00.
