LONG BEACH, CA-- No. 4 UCLA got scoring from seven different players and held off a late Long Beach State rally to defeat the 49ers 9-8 on Sunday afternoon in front of 348 fans at the 49er Campus Pool. UCLA improves to 17-5 overall and 3-1 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), while the 49ers lose their seventh in a row and fall to 15-12 and 0-4 in the MPSF.

Long Beach jumped to a 2-1 lead in the first quarter as Jay Gerardi scored his first of four goals on the day at 2:26. UCLA tied the game at 2-2 as Marco Santos scored at 0:40 to end the first quarter. The Bruins then took control of the game by out-scoring the 49ers four-to-one in the second quarter. Each team traded goals to begin the session, but UCLA scored the final three of the period to take a 6-3 halftime lead. Justin Johnson (3:12), Krsto Sbutega (1:59) and Santos (0:21) all tallied for the Bruins.

In the third quarter the 49ers got scores from Brett McCleave (4:47) and Satoshi Sakata (2:01) to pull to within 6-5, but UCLA scored on a man-advantage at 1:24 as John Blanchette found the back of the net to give UCLA a 7-5 lead.

In the fourth quarter the Bruins scored two quick goals in the first two minutes to take a 9-5 lead. Long Beach fought back behind Gerardi who scored the final three goals for the 49ers (4:43, 1:40, 0:07) to close out the game. Gerardi's four goals ties his career-high which he set earlier this year against Princeton. Sbutega and Santos each scored twice for the Bruins.

Both goalies made some outstanding saves during the day. 49er Thomas Onyshko had 10 saves, including six in the second half, while his counterpart Will Didiinger recorded nine saves.

The 49ers hit the road next weekend as they play at UC Davis (Nov. 11), Pacific (No. 12) and California (Nov. 13).
