Williams Highlights Day At SDSU Fall Classic Katy Williams Moves To Semi-final of Top Singles Bracket November 4, 2005 SAN DIEGO, CA-- The Long Beach State women's tennis team is competing this weekend at the San Diego State Fall Tennis Classic at the Aztec Tennis Center. All seven teams entered in the touranment finished the 2005 season nationally-ranked, led by No. 6 Georgia Tech. The 49ers, who were ranked No. 59 last year, are joined by Florida State (#43), San Diego State (#47), New Mexico (#50), Rice (#51) and the University of San Diego (#68). The singles bracket is broken up into three divisions, Red, Black and Gold, with the Red Bracket the top two singles players on each squad.
In singles play, freshman Katy Williams had a big day winning two matches in the top bracket, the Red Bracket, to advance to Saturday's semi-finals. Williams won her first match of the day over Lyndsay Shosho of Georgia Tech 6-2, 6-2 and then came back to beat Dita Hauerlandova of San Diego State 6-2, 6-0. Williams will next face Georgia Tech's Kelly Anderson in the semi-finals. Anderson was ranked No. 102 in the pre-season in the ITA Rankings.
Also in first round singles, Sandra Rocha defeated Suzanna Mansour of Florida State 6-1, 1-6, 10-0, but fell in the second round to No. 77-ranked Blair DiSesa of Rice, 6-2, 6-2. Jessica Weeks defeated Ola Abou-Zekry of New Mexico 4-6, 6-2, 10-6 in the first round, but fell to Jenny Brown of USD 7-6 (4), 6-3 in the second. Rachael Porsz won 6-3, 6-4 over San Diego State's Sisse Nielsen, but lost to MacKenzie White of New Mexico in the second round, 7-5, 6-2. Rounding out singles play, Krystina Katayama lost to Kimberly Patenaude of Rice 6-4, 6-0 and then fell to Elisa Bonner of New Mexico, 6-3, 6-2. Emmanuelle Tabatruong lost 6-0, 6-4 to Medeja Egic of Rice in the first round, but stayed alive in the consolation bracket with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Rice's Amy Lao. Williams and Tabatruong are the lone two 49er singles players left.
In doubles action, the 49ers have all three doubles teams alive in the consolation bracket. Willams/Rocha lost their opening match, 8-4 to Anderson/McCray of Georgia Tech. Porsz and Tabatruong fell 8-2 to Nystrom/Skold-Mihailescu of Florida State and Weeks and Katayama fell 9-8 (5) to Dao/Karas of Rice in the second round after receiving a first round bye.
Action continues on Saturday and Sunday at the Aztec Tennis Center.
