LOS ANGELES, CA-- Long Beach State junior Jay Gerardi scored a career-high tying four goals, but No. 1 USC was able to use a big first half en route to a 10-8 win over Long Beach State in the opening round of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Tournament at USC's McDonald Swim Stadium. USC (22-1) moves on to Saturday's semi-finals against California, while the 49ers (17-16) will take on UCLA in the consolation bracket.
USC jumped to a 4-2 lead after one quarter and then extended the lead to 5-2 at the half. Long Beach scored six second half goals, but never was able to take the lead as the Trojans hung five goals in the second period. Juraj Zatovic and Juan Delgadillo both scored three goals for USC and Long Beach resident Thomas Hale added two.
Senior Brett McCleave scored two goals for the 49ers and Stefan Ludecke and Reid Tomassi each scored once. Goalie Thomas Onyshko had eight goalie saves on the day. USC goalie Don Ricci recorded 11 saves.
The 49ers will take on UCLA in the consolation side of the bracket on Saturday morning at 10 am. USC will tangle with Cal at 1 pm.
