The Record: Long Beach State will play two games this week, traveling to UC Irvine on Thursday night and hosting UCLA on Sunday at 12 pm. The 49ers are 15-10 overall and 0-2 in the MPSF. Long Beach is once again ranked No. 8 in the country. No. 6-ranked UC Irvine is 12-10 overall and 2-2 in the MPSF and UCLA, ranked No. 4, is 16-5 overall and 2-1 in the MPSF.
The Coach: Rick Azevedo is 105-88 (.544) in his seventh year as the head coach at Long Beach State. He picked up win No. 100 on September 24 in an 11-3 win over Air Force.
The Series: The 49ers trail in their series with UC Irvine by a 62-21 margin. UCI defeated the 49ers 7-6 at the SoCal Tournament earlier this year. Last season the 49ers defeated UCI 11-10 in the regular season, but lost to the Anteaters 6-5 in the first round of the MPSF Tournament. Long Beach trails in its series with UCLA by a 58-19 margin. Last year the Bruins defeated the 49ers 11-6 at UCLA. USC Wins In Fourth Quarter: The 49ers hung tough with No. 1-ranked USC last Sunday, but lost in the fourth quarter, being out-scored five to two. USC won the game 13-9 after leading just 8-7 after three quarters. Brett McCleave and Jay Gerardi both had three goals for The Beach.
So Close: Of the 10 losses this season, five have been by one goal and two by two goals. The other losses were by three, four and six goals. On the opposite end, the 49ers have won just one game by one goal (11-10 over Navy) and three times by two goals. The Beach is 1-5 in games decided by one goal.
Brett McCleave: Senior Brett McCleave (Lake Forest) continues to pace the 49er offense this season. McCleave has tallied 61 goals this year, an average of 2.44 goals per game. He ranks second in the MPSF at 2.44 goals per game and his 61 total goals leads all players. McCleave has scored in 24 of the 25 games this year and has hit double digits in goals 19 times. McCleave is No. 17 on the 49er career goals scored chart with 111 goals.
Erik Geoffroy: Senior Erik Geoffroy (Rossmoor) had a big game on against Stanford, scoring a season-high tying four goals. He tallied two goals last week against USC. Geoffroy is currently second on the team with 39 goals scored and is in third place all-time at LBSU with 176 career goals. He has scored a goal in 13 of the last 14 games and in his last 12 games he has scored 24 of his 39 goals.
Thomas Onyshko: Senior goalie Thomas Onyshko (Simi Valley) took over the No. 1 spot in career saves at the NorCal Tournament as he recorded 35 saves in the four games. Onyshko set the mark on Saturday against Cal. Onyshko currently has 758 career saves, breaking the previous mark of 724 set by Brian Flint (1984-86). He has tallied 193 saves this season for a 7.72 save per game average. Onyshko ranks third in the MPSF in saves per game. He has hit double digits in saves seven times.
Brad Scoles: Senior Brad Scoles (Ashland, OR) has played in every game in his three-plus years at Long Beach State, 117 appearances in the pool. He has been in the starting lineup in 101 of those contests. Scoles has 34 goals scored this year and 104 in his 49er career (Tied for No. 19 all-time).
Jay Gerardi: Junior Jay Gerardi (Long Beach, CA) scored three times last week at USC, giving him 36 goals on the year, third on the team. His 1.44 goal per game average ranks No. 17 in the MPSF. Gerardi tallied 34 goals last year as a full-time starter and surpassed that mark last weekend.
