49ers Secure Final MPSF Berth

49ers Win Home Finale, 10-7
LONG BEACH, CA-- No. 8-ranked Long Beach State (17-14, 1-6 MPSF) secured the final berth in next week's Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship held at USC, by cruising by visiting UC Santa Barbara (13-16, 0-7 MPSF) 10-7 on Saturday afternoon. The 49ers used a four-goal, third quarter to win its home finale for the team's eight seniors and newly minted U.S. National Coach Ricardo Azevedo, who will leave the program after the season. Erik Geoffrey (Rossmoor, CA) and Reid Tomassi (Winter Park, FL) split the four goals in the period, as Brad Scoles led all scorers with three goals. Senior Tom Onyshko (Simi Valley) made seven saves in net, holding the Gauchos to just three goals over the first three periods of play as LBSU built an 8-3 lead. Jay Gerardi had two goals in the first half to give LBSU a 4-2 lead with 2:39 left in the second period. Ramiro Saldain and Miles Price each had two goals for the Gauchos. John Bonafetti had 13 saves for UCSB, making six of them in the first period. The 49ers close out the regular season at Pepperdine on Sunday at 1 p.m., while UCSB closes out the season with UC Irvine. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
