Berkeley, CA -- Cal's Brian Kinsel scored off a John Mann assist with 58 seconds left in the second overtime period to give the No. 2 Bears (19-5, 5-2) a 12-11 victory over No. 8 Long Beach State (15-14, 0-6) Sunday afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Complex. It was the second time this season Cal has won a one-goal match over the 49ers, defeating Long Beach State 9-8 in the second round of the NorCal Open at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
Jay Gerardi led the 49ers with three goals on the day, while Matt Shafer, Stefan Ludecke and Brad Scoles each tallied two. Shea Buckner led the Golden Bears with four goals.
In the first overtime Gerardi scored his second goal of the game with 54 seconds remaining in the period, giving the 49ers a 10-9 lead. Mann then scored his first goal of the game with 32 seconds remaining in the first overtime period, tying the game at 11-11. Kinsel scored the only goal of the final overtime period, with 58 seconds left in the period.
With 4:00 remaining in the second period Buckner scored the first of his four goals for Cal. The 49ers Matt Shafer tied the game up with 3:21 remaining and Matthies gave Cal the lead again on the ensuing possession. Long Beach then scored three straight goals (Shafer, Stefan Ludecke and Reid Tomassi) to give the 49ers a 6-4 advantage. Buckner brought Cal back within one goal with seven seconds left in the period and the first half of play ended with Long Beach State leading 6-5.
After a Gerardi goal gave the 49ers a 7-5 lead, Michael Sharf immediately retaliated for Cal, scoring with 5:55 remaining in the period. Joe Sherrin scored a goal for the 49ers with 5:16 remaining in the third period giving Long Beach State a two goal lead, but Cal scored four straight goals to close out the third period and open the fourth period to take a 10-8 lead.
In the fourth quarter the 49ers were able to tie the game as Ludecke (4:08) and Sherrin (2:10) tallied goals to send the game into overtime.
The 49ers will be home next Saturday, as they host UC Santa Barbara at 12 pm at the Campus Pool in its final home game of the season.
