RIVERSIDE , CA-- Junior Jay Gerardi (Long Beach/Wilson HS) scored a career-high four goals to lift eighth-ranked Long Beach State to a 12-7 win over 12th-ranked Princeton on Saturday afternoon at the Cal Baptist Tournament. The Beach snaps a short two-game losing skid with the victory. The 49ers then came back later in the day to defeat Cal Baptist 9-7 to improve to 14-5 on the season.
Gerardi led a 49er offense which hit double digits in goals for the 14th time this season. With his four goals, Gerardi is now second on the team with 28 goals this year. The 49ers also got two goals each from Brad Scoles, Reid Tomassi and Erik Geoffroy. Brett McCleave and Stefan Ludecke closed out the scoring. Long Beach broke open a tight game in the third quarter. Leading 5-4 at the half, the 49ers out-scored the Tigers 3-0 in the third quarter. Long Beach then added four more goals in the fourth quarter tohold off the Tigers. Kyle Morgan and Brendan Colgan each scored twice for Princeton.
In the win over Cal Baptist, McCleave led the way with four goals, while five other 49ers tallied one goal. Long Beach led 8-3 after three quarters and coasted from there. Goalie Thomas Onyshko recorded 15 saves in the two games giving him 709 in his Long Beach State career. He needs just 16 more to become the all-time leader, passing Brian Flint's 724 career saves.
The 49ers will next be in action next weekend when they play at the NorCal Tournament. |
