The Record: Long Beach State dropped its MPSF opener this past Saturday, falling to Stanford 10-8 at the 49er Campus Pool. The 49ers are 15-9 on the year and 0-1 in MPSF play. They play just once this week, at USC on Saturday morning. USC is ranked No. 1 in the country and is 14-1 overall and 1-0 in the MPSF. The Trojans defeated UCSB last Saturday 10-3 and have won seven games in a row.
The Coach: Rick Azevedo is 105-87 (.547) in his seventh year as the head coach at Long Beach State. He picked up win No. 100 on September 24 in an 11-3 win over Air Force.
The Series: The 49ers trail in their series with USC by a 49-22 margin. The Trojans defeated the 49ers earlier this year, 12-6 at the SoCal Tournament. USC has won the last eight meetings from Long Beach. The last 49er win was a 11-9 win in Long Beach in 2000.
Tough Loss To Cardinal: The 49ers trailed 5-4 at the half, but a tough third quarter doomed them. Stanford out-scored the 49ers 4-1 in the third quarter to pull away en route to a 10-8 win. Erik Geoffroy had four goals for the 49ers, but Stanford capitalized on a four-meter penalty shot and a two-on-one breakaway to ice the game. Peter Varellas led the Cardinal with three goals and Sandy Hohener had nine saves.
So Close: Of the nine losses this season, five have been by one goal and two by two goals. The other losses were by three and six goals. On the opposite end, the 49ers have won just one game by one goal (11-10 over Navy) and three times by two goals. The Beach is 1-5 in games decided by one goal.
Erik Geoffroy: Senior Erik Geoffroy (Rossmoor) had a big game on Saturday against Stanford, scoring a season-high tying four goals. Geoffroy is currently second on the team with 37 goals scored and moved into a tie for third place all-time at LBSU with 174 career goals. He has scored a goal in 12 of the last 13 games and in his last 11 games he has scored 22 of his 37 goals.
Thomas Onyshko: Senior goalie Thomas Onyshko (Simi Valley) took over the No. 1 spot in career saves at the NorCal Tournament as he recorded 35 saves in the four games. Onyshko set the mark on Saturday against Cal. Onyshko currently has 749 career saves, breaking the previous mark of 724 set by Brian Flint (1984-86). He has tallied 183 saves this season for a 7.63 save per game average. He has hit double digits in saves seven times.
Brett McCleave: Senior Brett McCleave (Lake Forest) continues to pace the 49er offense this season. McCleave has tallied 58 goals this year, an average of 2.42 goals per game. McCleave has scored in 23 of the 24 games this year and has hit double digits in goals 18 times. McCleave is No. 17 on the 49er career goals scored chart with 108 goals.
Brad Scoles: Senior Brad Scoles (Ashland, OR) has played in every game in his three-plus years at Long Beach State, 116 appearances in the pool. He has been in the starting lineup in 100 of those contests. Scoles has 34 goals scored this year and 104 in his 49er career (Tied for No. 19 all-time).
MPSF Stats: In the latest MPSF statistics, Brett McCleave ranks second in the league in scoring at 2.42 goals per game. His 58 total goals scored leads all players in the conference. Erik Geoffroy ranks 14th at 1.54, Brad Scoles 15th at 1.42 and Jay Gerardi 17th at 1.38. Thomas Onyshko ranks third in the league in saves per game at 7.63 and eighth in goals against average at 7.17.
