Big Third Quarter Lifts Stanford
LONG BEACH, CA-- A four-goal third quarter keyed the No. 3-ranked Stanford Cardinal to a 10-8 win over Long Beach State on Saturday afternoon in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) game at the 49er Campus Pool in front of 333 fans. Stanford improved to 13-3 on the season and 2-0 in the MPSF, while the No. 8-ranked 49ers fell to 15-9 and 0-1 in league play. Leading 5-4 at the half, Stanford out-scored the 49ers 4-1 in the third quarter to take command of the game. Thomas Hopkins got things rolling at 6:09 in the third scoring on a four-meter penalty shot after an ejection on the 49ers Erik Geoffroy. Geoffroy then pulled the 49ers to within 6-5 with a goal at 5:48, his second of a team-high four goals on the day. Two possessions later Stanford took over posession in the middle of the pool off a 49er turnover and scored on a two-man fastbreak at 3:25 as Peter Varellas found the back of the net. On Stanford's next possession, J.J. Garton picked up a goal at 2:17 off a goalie deflection by the 49ers Thomas Onyshko. Garton was in front of the net, rebounded the save by Onyshko and put the ball in the righthand corner of the goal. The Cardinal closed out the quarter as Tyler Drake scored at 1:32, giving Stanford a 9-5 lead after three quarters. Varellas led the Cardinal with three goals, while Hopkins and William Hindle-Katel both scored twice. Geoffroy scored four goals for The Beach and Jay Gerardi, Stefan Ludecke, Brad Scoels and Brett McCleave all tallied one goal. The game got off to a great start as each team scored three goals in the first quarter. Gerardi got things going for The Beach with a goal at 4:06, while Geoffroy (1:43) and Ludecke (0:40) also tallied first quarter scores. Marcello Pantuliano's goal with thirteen seconds left tied the game at 3-3. In the second quarter the Cardinal scored the eventual go-ahead goal with just three seconds left on the clock, as Varellas scored from long-range to give Stanford a 5-4 halftime lead. Stanford has currently won its last nine meetings with the 49ers. The 49ers will be in action on Sunday when they host their Alumni team at 12 pm at the Campus Pool. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
