Strong Opening Day At ITA Event
Three Singles & Two Doubles Teams Advance In Main Draw
October 20, 2005 SAN DIEGO, CA-- The Long Beach State women's tennis team had a strong first day at the Wilson/ITA West Region Championships in San Diego. The Beach had three singles players and two doubles teams advance in the main draw.
In singles, Katy Williams won her opening match 7-5, 6-2 over UCSB's Kristen Wilson. In the second round, Williams dispatched of Izabela Mijic of UC Irvine, 7-5, 6-0. Jessica Weeks, who had a first round bye, defeated Ashley Siddall of UC Irvine in the second round, 6-4, 6-7, 7-5. Sandra Rocha also advanced to the third round. She defeated UCSB's Charlotte Scatliffe 6-3, 6-1 in the first round and Canna Furuta of CS Northridge 6-7, 6-1, Default in the second round.
In doubles, Williams and Rocha won their first round match 8-1 over Hawaii's Sandborn/Katayama. Weeks and Rachael Porsz had a first round bye and advance to Friday's second round.
Play continues on Friday through Monday on the campuses of San Diego State and the University of San Diego.
