The Record: Long Beach State begins Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) play this Saturday as they host Stanford at 12 pm at the Campus Pool. The 49ers are 15-8 overall after going 1-3 at the NorCal Tournament last weekend. Stanford is 11-3 on the season and took third place at the NorCal with a 6-5 win over UCLA.
The Coach: Rick Azevedo is 105-86 (.550) in his seventh year as the head coach at Long Beach State.
The Series: Stanford has dominated its series with the 49ers, leading by a 52-8-1 margin. Last year the Cardinal won both meetings with the 49ers, both by a 13-3 margin. Stanford won the MPSF contest in Palo Alto and defeated the 49ers in the SoCal Tournament. Stanford has won the last eight meetings. The last 49er win came in the 2000 season, an 11-8 win at Stanford.
NorCal Tournament: The 49ers went 1-3 at the NorCal Tournament, falling to UC Irvine in the 7th place game, 10-9. Brett McCleave led the 49er offense by scoring 10 goals in the four games, while Brad Scoles and Erik Geoffroy each tallied six goals. LBSU 9, LMU 7: Scoles and McCleave each scored two goals as the 49ers defeated the Lions 9-7. LBSU led 6-3 at the half and held on from there. Thomas Onyshko had 11 saves. Cal 9, LBSU 8: The Golden Bears scored the game-winner with 0:23 left in the game. Scoles, McCleave and Geoffroy all tallied two goals and Onyshko had 12 saves. Pepperdine 11, LBSU 8: Pepperdine out-scored the 49ers 4-1 in the third quarter to break open a tight 6-5 game at the half. McCleave tallied four goals and Jay Gerardi two. UCI 10, LBSU 9: Once again the 49ers dropped a tough one, falling in the 7th place game. Reid Tomassi and Geoffroy each scored three goals, while McCleave added two.
Thomas Onyshko: Senior goalie Thomas Onyshko (Simi Valley) took over the No. 1 spot in career saves this past weekend at the NorCal Tournament. Onyshko set the mark on Saturday against Cal. He tallied 35 saves on the weekend, giving him 744 in his career. Onyshko broke the previous mark of 724 set by Brian Flint (198486). He has tallied 178 saves this season for a 7.74 save per game average. He has hit double digits in saves seven times this season.
Brett McCleave: Senior Brett McCleave (Lake Forest) continues to pace the 49er offense this season. With 10 goals in the four games at the NorCal Tournament, McCleave has 57 goals this year. Last year, when he was named second team All-MPSF and the MPSF Newcomer of the Year, he tallied 50 goals total. McCleave has scored in 22 of the 23 games this year and has hit double digits in goals 18 times, including the last five games in a row. He had four goals in the 49ers loss to Pepperdine on Sunday, the fifth time this season he has scored four goals in a game. McCleave is now No. 17 on the 49er career goals scored chart with 107 goals.
Erik Geoffroy: Senior Erik Geoffroy (Rossmoor) continues to get stronger as the season progresses. Geoffroy is tied for second on the team with 33 goals and has scored a goal in 12 of the last 13 games. In his last 10 games he has scored 18 of his 33 goals. He had six goals last weekend at the NorCal. Geoffroy is No. 4 all-time at LBSU with 170 career goals.
Brad Scoles: Senior Brad Scoles (Ashland, OR) has played in every game in his three-plus years at Long Beach State, 115 appearances in the pool. He has been in the starting lineup in 99 of those contests. Scoles has 33 goals scored this year and l103 in his 49er career (No. 20 all-time). Scoles scored six goals at the NorCal Tournament last weekend, including two against LMU and Cal.
Reid Tomassi: Junior Reid Tomassi (Winter Park, FL) scored five goals last weekend at the NorCal, including three against UC Irvine.
