Beach Heads to San Diego For ITA Event
Six Singles & Three Doubles Teams Entered In Event
October 18, 2005 LONG BEACH, CA-- The Long Beach State women's tennis team will head south this weekend to San Diego to compete at the Wilson/ITA West Region Championships hosted by San Diego State and the University of San Diego. Action begins on Thursday at both sites with singles and doubles play. The singles finalists and doubles champion from this event will earn spots in the November 3-6 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships hosted by Ohio State at the Racquet Club of Columbus. This is one of 17 Wilson/ITA Regional Championships being held for both men and women over the last two weekends of October.
The 49ers will be well represented at the ITA Regionals as six singles players and three doubles teams will be competing. Freshman Jessica Weeks received a first round bye, but the other five singles players will play a first round match. The number one seed in the singles draw is Lindsey Nelson of USC. The number one doubles seed is also from USC, Nelson and Dianne Matias.
Long Beach is coming off an impressive performance two weeks ago at the CS Fullerton Fall Intercollegiates where they won three titles. Rachael Porsz won the singles back draw championship and teamed with Weeks to win the doubles back draw as well. In the doubles main draw, Katy Williams and Sandra Rocha won the title with an 8-6 win over Asimgil/Jovic of Pepperdine. Williams advanced to the semi-finals of the singles main draw, before falling to UCSB's Marielle Gruenig.
