BERKELEY, CA-- The eighth-ranked Long Beach State men's water polo team suffered two tough losses on Sunday at the NorCal Tournament at the Spieker Aquatics Complex in Berkeley. In the morning the 49ers fell to No. 7-ranked Pepperdine 11-8. In the afternoon the Beach (15-7) fell to No. 6-ranked UC Irvine 10-9 in the 7th place game.
In its first game, senior Brett McCleave tallied four goals and Jay Gerardi added two, but the Waves (12-5) held on for the 11-8 victory. Trailing 6-5 at the half, the 49er defense struggled in the third quarter as the Waves out-scored the 49ers four-to-one to grab a 10-6 lead. Long Beach could only manage two fourth quarter goals. Brad Scoles and Kevin Bradley each scored once for the 49ers. Matt Digges led the Waves with four goals and goalie Ben Tait recorded 11 goalie saves.
In the seventh place game, UC Irvine (9-8) was able to squeak out a 10-9 win. The 49ers led 4-3 after one quarter, but trailed 7-6 at the half. Reid Tomassi and Erik Geoffroy both scored three goals, while McCleave added two and Scoles one. Dreason Barry led the Anteaters with three goals.
The 49ers will be at home next Saturday, October 22 when they begin Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) play against Stanford at 12 pm at the Campus Pool.
