BERKELEY, CA-- The eighth-ranked 49er men's water polo team dropped a heartbreaking 9-8 decision to third-ranked California on Saturday at the NorCal Tournament at the Spieker Aquatics Complex in Berkeley. The Golden Bears (12-2) scored the game-winning goal with just 0:23 left on the clock.
Long Beach battled back from a 6-3 halftime deficit to tie the game at 8-8 after Brett McCleave scored his second goal of the game with 3:34 left. But, Michael Sharf of Cal found the back of the net with 0:23 left on the clock to lift the Golden Bears. Brad Scoles and Erik Geoffroy both had two goals for the 49ers, as did McCleave. Thomas Onyshko recorded 12 goalie saves in the game.
In the first game of the day, Scoles and McCleave both tallied two goals to lead the 49ers to a 9-7 win over Loyola Marymount. The 49ers jumped to a 3-1 lead after one quarter and never gave up the lead from there. Jay Gerardi, Stefan Ludecke, Reid Tomassi, Geoffroy and Satoshi Sakata all tallied a goal in the victory. Onyshko recorded 11 goalie saves.
In the Cal game, Onyshko became the 49ers career leader in saves. With 23 saves on the day, he now has accumulated 732 career saves, passing Brian Flint's (1984-86) 724 saves.
