The Record: Long Beach State heads to Northern California for the annual NorCal Tournament with a record of 14-5 and a No. 8 national ranking. The 49ers will take on No. 12- ranked Loyola Marymount (10-9) in its first game on Saturday at 11:30 am at the Spieker Aquatics Complex on the UC Berkeley campus. Also in the 49ers bracket are No. 2- ranked USC and UC Santa Cruz.
The Coach: Rick Azevedo is 104-83 (.556) in his seventh year as the head coach at Long Beach State.
The Series: This will be the first meeting between the 49ers and the Lions this season. Long Beach State leads the series by an 8-3 count. LMU has won the last three meetings though with the 49ers, including an 8-7 overtime win last year at the SoCal Tournament.
Cal Baptist Tournament: The 49ers won two games last weekend at Cal Baptist. In the first game, Jay Gerardi scored a career-high four goals as the 49ers defeated Princeton 12-7. Brad Scoles, Reid Tomassi and Erik Geoffroy all added two goals in the victory. In the nightcap, Long Beach raced to an 8-3 lead after three quarters and held on from there in a 9-7 win over Cal Baptist. Brett McCleave led the way with four goals.
Offensive Pace: Through the first 19 games of the season the 49ers have hit double digits in scoring 14 times. The Beach is currently averaging 11.47 goals per game, on pace to set a school-record. With 218 goals scored thus far, the 49ers are looking to break the school-record of 313 goals set in both 1981 and 1985. In 1981 the 49ers finished 25-9, averaging 9.21 goals per game. In 1985 the 49ers were 23-10, averaging 9.48 goals per outing.
Jay Gerardi: Junior Jay Gerardi (Long Beach) scored a career-high four goals in last weekend's win over Princeton. Gerardi is currently second on the team with 29 goals and ranks No. 17 in the MPSF at 1.53 goals per game. Gerardi has scored at least one goal in 17 of the 19 games and has nine multiple-goal games. He has scored in 14 consecutive games. Gerardi is also first on the team with 25 assists, third in steals with 15 and second in earned ejections with 14.
Brett McCleave: Senior Brett McCleave (Lake Forest) had five goals last weekend, including four vs. Cal Baptist. McCleave leads the 49ers with 47 goals and is second in the MPSF at 2.47 goals per game. He has scored in all but one game this season and has 14 multiple-goal games. McCleave also leads the 49ers with 40 earned ejections. He is tied for No. 19 on the 49er career goals scored chart with 97 goals.
Erik Geoffroy: Senior Erik Geoffroy (Rossmoor) continues to climb his way up the 49er career scoring chart. With three goals last Saturday, Geoffroy now is No. 5 all-time at LBSU with 164 career goals. He has scored 27 goals this season, a mark which ties him for third on the team. He has scored a goal in nine consecutive games.
Thomas Onyshko: Senior goalie Thomas Onyshko (Simi Valley) keeps inching closer to the No. 1 spot in career saves. Onyshko has 143 saves this year and 709 in his 49er career. He needs just 16 more saves to become the school record-holder, passing Brian Flint (724 saves). He has hit double digits in saves five times this season.
Brad Scoles: Senior Brad Scoles (Ashland, OR) has played in every game in his three-plus years at Long Beach State, 111 appearances in the pool. He has been in the starting lineup in 95 of those contests. Scoles has 27 goals scored this year and leads the team with 31 steals.
Joe Sherrin: Freshman Joe Sherrin (Cypress, CA) has made quite an impact in his first year as a 49er. An outstanding prep from Wilson High School, Sherrin has played in all 19 games, starting 16 times this season.
