Beach Falls To UCLA, 6-4 Long Beach Finishes In Fourth Place
May 2, 2004 LONG BEACH, CA-- Molly Cahill and Kristina Kunkel both scored two goals to lead UCLA (22-6) to a 6-4 win over Long Beach State (21-9) in the third place game at the 2004 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Women's Water Polo Championships at the Joint Forces Naval Base. The 49ers finished in fourth place at the MPSF Tournament for the third consecutive season.
UCLA got on the scoreboard first as Kacy Kunkel found the back of the net at 4:25 in the first quarter. The Beach tied the game at 1-1 after a Roberta Stewart goal at 2:11. In the second quarter the Bruins got goals from Katie Flanagan (5:09) and Cahill (1:52) to take a 3-1 lead before the 49ers cut the deficit to 3-2 at the half on a goal by Angelica Garcia at 1:32.
In the third quarter the Bruins pulled ahead 5-2 as Cahill (4:54) and Kristina Kunkel (3:25) scored. Long Beach was able to cut into the deficit as Robyn Gordin scored twice in the fourth quarter (5:32, 0:07), but Kunkel's second goal of the day at 3:31 in the fourth proved to be too much, giving UCLA a 6-3 lead.
In goal, 49er Bri Hawkins had a stellar match finishing with 12 saves while her counterpart, Emily Feher had seven.
Long Beach State finishes the season at 21-9, its second consecutive season with 20-plus victories.
