49ers Battle Bruins To The End "We really competed well today," said Head Coach Jenny Hilt-Costello. "We created some opportunities across the board, we just didn't capitalize on some of them. I'm extremely proud of this team though." The day began with UCLA pulling out the doubles point. At the No. 1 position, Daniela Bercek and Lauren Fisher, who are ranked No. 23 in the nation, defeated the 49ers Nicole Bouffler and Sandra Rocha, 8-3. At No. 3 doubles, Sarah Gregg and Laura Gordon battled back from a 7-6 deficit to edge Krystina Katayama and Emmanuelle Tabatruong, 9-7. The No. 2 doubles match was not finished, as UCLA's Jackie Carleton and Feriel Esseghir led Kelly Chan and Alanah Carroll, 6-5. Chan and Carroll had battled back from a 4-1 deficit to make it a match, but the comeback was halted when UCLA won at No. 3 doubles. In singles play the Bruins won at the No. 1, 5 and 6 positions. At No. 1 singles, Bercek outlasted Bouffler 6-3, 6-4. Bercek is ranked No. 31 nationally, while Bouffler entered the week at No. 88. Fisher was able to hold off Rocha at the No. 5 position, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6 in the tiebreaker) and Gordon prevailed at No. 6 singles 6-2, 6-0 over Katayama. In the three matches that were still going on when play was suspended, the 49ers were playing well. Kelly Chan was tangled in a tough match with Carleton, who is ranked No. 18 nationally. Chan won the first set, 6-1, but Carleton bounced back to win the second set 6-4 and led 5-0 in the third. At No. 3 singles, Carroll won her first set against Esseghir 7-6 (7-5 tiebreaker) and led 4-1 in the second set. Tabatruong was holding her own at No. 4 singles against Gregg. Gregg won the opening set 6-2, but the second set was tied 6-6. The 49ers NCAA appearance was the second in the past three years. The Beach, led by Big West Coach of the Year Hilt-Costello, finished the season at 18-9, its fourth consecutive winning season. DOUBLES |
