Beach Heads To Central Coast Long Beach Plays At Cal Poly And UCSB This Week
PDF VERSION OF THIS RELEASE April 6, 2004 The Records: Long Beach State saw its 11-match winning streak come to an end on Saturday afternoon as Pacific scored a 4-3 upset over the 49ers. LBSU is now 13-6 overall and hits the road this week playing at Cal Poly on Thursday and UCSB on Saturday. Cal Poly is 11-7 overall and 7-1 vs. Big West Conference foes, with its only loss coming to Pacific. UCSB is 7-10 overall and 3-4 vs. the Big West. The Gauchos host Saint Mary's on Tuesday afternoon. The 49ers are ranked No. 51 in the nation this week and Cal Poly checks in at No. 62.
The Coach: Jenny Hilt-Costello (UCLA, 1994) is 96-62 (.608) in her seventh year as the head coach at Long Beach State. Hilt-Costello has led the 49ers to three consecutive appearances in the Big West Tournament Championship match, winning the crown in 2002.
The Series: The 49ers lead in their series with Cal Poly by an 8-7-1 margin. Last year the 49ers fell twice to the Mustangs, losing 4-3 in Long Beach in the regular season finale and then falling 4-1 in the championship of the Big West Tournament. The 49ers and UCSB are tied 9-9 in their series, but the 49ers have won the last five in a row, including a 4-3 win last year in Long Beach.
Playing The Best: Of the 22 NCAA Division I programs on the 2004 49er spring schedule, 10 are currently ranked in the Top 75 in the latest ITA Tennis rankings. Listed in order are: USC (8), Michigan (25), Pepperdine, (30), Oregon (34), Sacramento State (38), Marshall (46), Boston College (50), Pacific (53), Cal Poly (62), San Diego State (69).
Doubles Prowess: The play of all three doubles teams has picked up since the beginning of March. The 49ers have swept the doubles in five of their last six matches, and in seven of its last nine. The duo at No. 1 doubles of Nicole Bouffler and Sandra Rocha are 13-6 overall this spring, and have won six in a row and eight of nine. At No. 2 doubles, Kelly Chan and Alanah Carroll are 11-2, and at No. 3 doubles, Lindsey Marvel and Krystina Katayama are 8-1 this spring. Bouffler Stopped At 11 In A Row: Junior Nicole Bouffler won her 11th consecutive match at No. 1 singles on Friday with a 6-4, 6-0 triumph over Brown's Alex Arlak. Unfortunately on Saturday her string of victories came to an end. Bouffler fell 7-5, 6-2 to Pacific's Vana Mrazovic. Bouffler is now 22-8 this year in singles play, including a 13-6 mark this spring. Chan No. 1 In Doubles: Thanks to an 11-2 record at No. 2 doubles with Alanah Carroll this spring, senior Kelly Chan has recorded 19 doubles wins this year (spring and fall) and has moved into first all-time at LBSU with 64 doubles victories. The previous record-holder is Havaja Frljuckic's 63 wins from 1984-87. In overall wins (both singles and doubles) Chan has accumulated 100 career wins (36 singles/64 doubles) to rank fourth all-time. Frljuckic holds the record with 133 career wins, Antonia Wolff is second with 118 and Lindsey Marvel third with 110. 11-Match Win Streak: The 11-match win streak was the third longest in 49er women's tennis history. The school record was 17 in a row during the 2001 season and in the 2002 campaign The Beach won 16 consecutive matches. 20-Plus Singles Wins: The 49ers have two players who have hit 20 singles wins this year (fall and spring). Junior Nicole Bouffler is 22-8 in singles action this year, while sophomore Alanah Carroll is 20-10. the 22 victories is tied for eighth all-time in school history. The record is 28 singles wins set by Alena Dvornikova and Anastasia Dvornikova in the 2002 campaign.
