49ers Win Two On Opening Day
Beach Advances To Semi-Finals Vs. USC
April 30, 2004 LONG BEACH, CA-- Drue Wawrzynski scored three goals and Angelica Garcia two to lead Long Beach State to a 10-3 opening round win over Pacific at the MPSF Tournament at the Los Alamitos Joint Forces Training Base. In the nightcap, four different players scored two goals as the 49ers upset No. 4 seed San Diego State, 9-6. With the wins the 49ers reach 20 victories (21-7) for the second consecutive season.
Against Pacific, Robyn Gordin got LBSU on the scoreboard first finding the back of the net at 6:19 in the first quarter. The 49ers tallied five first quarter goals, with Wawrzynski scoring twice. The 49ers led 6-0 at the half and 7-0 in the third before the Tigers scored with 4:50 in the third on a goal by Amanda Tucker. 49er goalie Bri Hawkins had four goalie saves in three quarters, while allowing just one goal. Ally Barr played the final quarter for the 49ers in goal.
In the second game, the 49ers jumped to a 3-0 lead after one quarter and 4-1 at halftime. Roberta Stewart, Cassie Azevedo, Alsion Braden and Garcia all scored two goals for The Beach in the 9-6 victory. Wawrzynski scored the final goal for LBSU. The game opened up in the third quarter after a defensive first half. The 49ers scored four goals and the Aztecs three, but LBSU still held an 8-4 lead after three quarters and sealed the win on Garcia's second goal at 6:21 in the fourth, giving LBSU a 9-4 lead. Hawkins finished with seven goalie saves.
The 49ers will be in action at 5 pm Saturday when they take on USC in a semi-final contest.
