49ers Defeat UCSB In Big West Quarters
April 23, 2004 PALM DESERT, CA-- The Long Beach State women's tennis team opened up play at the 2004 Big West Conference Championships with a 4-2 win over UC Santa Barbara at the Indian Wells Tennis Gardens in Indian Wells, CA. The 49ers improve to 16-8 with the victory while UCSB falls to 10-12.
The 49ers won the match at No. 1 singles, where Nicole Bouffler battled to a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Marielle Gruenig. Bouffler is ranked No. 91 in the country in the latest ITA Singles Rankings and she is the reigning Big West Conference Co-Player of the Week. After dropping a tough 6-4 decision in the second set, Bouffler came out strong in the third. She broke Gruenig's serve to begin the set and went on to a 3-0 lead out of the gate, before finishing with the 6-3 win.
Also winning singles matches for the 49ers were Alanah Carroll and Emmanuelle Tabatroung. Carroll improved to 17-7 this spring with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Mio Fukushima at the No. 3 position. Tabatruong won at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 6-2 over Jen Kuhle.
The Beach began the day by winning two of the three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. At No. 1 doubles Bouffler and Sandra Rocha smoked the UCSB duo of Gruening/Kuhle, 8-0. At No. 3 doubles the 49er duo of Tabatroung and Krystina Katayama won 8-5 over Dillon/Fukushima. The Beach was also leading 7-5 at No. 2 doubles (Chan & Carroll), but that match was not finished since the 49ers had already clinched the doubles point.
The 49ers move to Saturday's semifinals where they take on the No. 2 seed Cal Poly, which defeated Idaho 4-1, at 2 pm at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
