49ers Host UCLA on Saturday Beach Has Won Three in a Row
Aoruk 6, 2004 FULL STATS LBSU TOURNAMENT ON DECK The No. 4-ranked 49ers will host their annual Long Beach State Tournament on Saturday and Sunday starting at 8:30 a.m. The 10-team field will feature top-ranked USC (19-0*), No. 4-ranked Long Beach State (15-6), No. 5-ranked San Diego State (19-6*), No. 6-ranked Hawaii (10-9*), Arizona State (9-14), CS Northridge (16-11), UC Irvine (8-14), UC San Diego (12-16*), Pacific (3-22) and UC Santa Cruz. Matches are split into two pools on campus at Long Beach State. (* indicate team will play this week prior to tournament). The 49ers will open up play with Hawaii in an MPSF match at 10 a.m. on Saturday and continue with a game against UC Irvine in a non-conference affair at 1 p.m. LBSU defeated UCI 8-4 earlier this year and lead the all-time series 7-0. LBSU has won the last three over Hawaii, but trail in the all-time series 10-3. On Sunday, The Beach will host Arizona State at 10 a.m.and UC Santa Cruz at 2:30 p.m. LBSU beat ASU 11-3 in mid-March at home and lead the all-time series 3-0. LBSU holds a 5-0 advantage over UC Santa Cruz. 49ERS CLOSE OUT REGULAR SEASON NEXT WEEK The 49ers will close out the regular season next week with two home matches, when they host the U.S. Women's National Team in an exhibition on Wednesday, April 21 at 4 p.m. and UC Santa Barbara in the final Mountain Pacific Sports Federation matchup on Saturday, April 24 at 2 p.m. The Beach then will host the MPSF Championships at Los Alamitos Naval Air Base starting on May 30 (see below). AZEVEDO AT THE HELM Ricardo Azevedo is in his fifth year as head coach of both the men's and women's programs, compiling a 73-66 record in five years with the men and a 92-63 record in four-plus years with the women. On the women's side, LBSU has set school-records for wins in three of his four seasons, including last year's remarkable 24-8 record. He was named the co-MPSF Coach of the Year in 2002. He is also an assistant with the Men's National Team, which features his son, Tony, one of the world's top players. LAST WEEK The 49ers dropped their fourth MPSF matchup of the season, a 5-3 loss to UCLA last Saturday. All six of the 49ers losses this year have been by three goals or less, with five of them coming to teams ranked ahead of them (USC, Stanford, UCLA). Angelica Garcia, Robyn Gordin and Alison Braden each scored for The Beach. ADDING TO THE ALL-TIME MARK Senior Angelica Garcia continues to add to her all-time scoring record with 37 goals this year and a school-record 186 in her four year career. Garcia and led or co-led the team in scoring in eight times this season.Garcia ranks fifth in the MPSF in goals per game with 1.76 per contest. RACKING UP THE SAVES Junior Bri Hawkins (San Diego) ranks third in the MPSF in saves with just over seven per game, as she is allowing just under five goals a game on the season. Hawkins is already the all-time saves leader with 571 career saves. Hawkins ranks fourth in the conference in goals allowed per game. BALANCED SCORING ATTACK The 49ers have three players who ranked amongst the MPSF leaders in goals per game, led by Angelica Garcia's 37 goals (1.76-5th), Cassie Azevedo's 35 goals (1.67-6th) and Drue Wawrzynski's 34 goals (1.62-8th). As a team, the 49ers rank second in the conference in scoring, averaging just under nine goals per game. USC leads the conference with an average of nearly 11 goals per game. AZEVEDO ROLES TO THIS WEEK'S BEST Sophomore attacker Cassie Azevedo (Long Beach) earned her first career Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Week award on April 5, after a strong weekend in Northern California. Azevedo scored eight goals and added 11 assists and 10 steals in leading The Beach to three wins. Azevedo led the team in assists and steals in all three contests, and scored a team-best four goals at California and three more at Pacific.
