49ers Defeat Arizona State, 11-3 Cassie Azevedo Leads Beach With Three Goals
March 20, 2004 LONG BEACH, CA-- Cassie Azevedo scored three goals to lead the No. 4-ranked Long Beach State women's water polo team to an 11-3 victory over Arizona State on Saturday afternoon at the 49er campus pool. With the win, the 49ers improve to 12-4 overall and 3-2 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), while Arizona State falls to 7-10 overall and 1-4 in the MPSF.
Long Beach jumped to a 3-0 lead after the first quarter and expanded its advantage to 4-0 after Alison Braden's goal at 4:11 in the second quarter. After ASU's Katie Davis scored the Sun Devil's first goal with 1:35 left in the half, the 49ers Angelica Garcia scored her second goal of the game to give the 49ers a 5-1 halftime lead.
The Sun Devils closed to within 5-3 in the third quarter on goals by Kimberlee Stevens (4:31) and Davis (3:17), only to see the 49ers finish the period with two goals to take a 7-3 lead. Azevedo scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter giving the Beach a comfortable 9-3 margin.
49er goalie Bri Hawkins finished with six goalie saves and her counterpart Jennifer Sanderson also tallied six saves.
The 49ers will next be in action on Saturday, March 27 when they host USC at 12pm.
