49ers Beat Utah, 5-2 Seventh Straight Win For The Beach
March 19, 2004 LONG BEACH, CA-- Behind the strong play of seniors Kelly Chan and Lindsey Marvel and junior Nicole Bouffler, the Long Beach State women's tennis team won its seventh straight match with a 5-2 win over the University of Utah (5-9) on Friday afternoon at the 49er Campus Courts. The Beach, which is ranked No. 55 in the country, improved to 9-5 with the win.
The 49ers got things off on the right foot by winning all three doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles, Bouffler and Sandra Rocha won 8-3 over Cinthia Saucedo and Sheri Esrock. At No. 2 doubles, Chan and Alanah Carroll won 8-2 over Whitney Eber and Jenessa Jackson, while at No. 3 doubles the 49er duo of Marvel and Krystina Katayama won 8-3 over Jessica Watts and Rachel Alder.
In singles play, Bouffler won her seventh consecutive singles match at No. 1 singles with a 6-1, 6-1 rout of Eber. Chan, playing at No. 2 singles, won 6-1, 6-3 over Esrock and Marvel, competing at the No. 4 spot, won 6-2, 6-1 over Alder. The final 49er point came at No. 6 singles where Emmanuelle Tabatruong won 6-1, 6-1 over Jenessa Jackson.
The 49ers are home on Saturday, March 20 when the take on No. 70 Nebraska at 11 am.
