Beach Host Arizona State in Lone Home Match 49ers Rturn Home for Mini Two-Game Jaunt
March 17, 2004 FULL STATISTICS BEACH HOST ARIZONA STATE SATURDAY No. 4-ranked Long Beach State (11-4, 2-2 MPSF) will host Arizona State (7-9, 1-3 MPSF) in a key Mountain Pacific Sports Federation matchup on Saturday at noon at the campus pool. The Beach, who dropped a one-goal decision at San Diego State last weekend, need to win this weekend to keep itself a float in the upper half of the 12-team conference standings.The Beach have won both meetings with ASU, outscoring the Sun Devils 25-5. LAST WEEK'S RECAP The 49ers split its two games in San Diego this past weekend, coming back to defeat UC San Diego 6-5 and losing 10-9 at San Diego State. In the team's first game, Angelica Garcia scored both of her goals in the fourth period to complete the comeback as LBSU were sluggish to start. In the game at SDSU, the back and forth affair fell in favor of the Aztecs as a game-tying shot with 30 seconds left, was blocked by SDSU's goalie, to give the No. 5-ranked Aztecs the win. Roberta Stewart played her first full weekend in two weeks after battling the flu. AZEVEDO AT THE HELM Ricardo Azevedo is in his fifth year as head coach of both the men's and women's programs, compiling a 73-66 record in five years with the men and a 88-61 record in four-plus years with the women. On the women's side, LBSU has set school-records for wins in three of his four seasons, including last year's remarkable 24-8 record. He was named the co-MPSF Coach of the Year in 2002. He is also an assistant with the Men's National Team, which features his son, Tony, one of the world's top players. BERTIE RETURNS IN A FLURY Two-time first team All-American Roberta Stewart (Auckland, NZ) returned to the 49ers starting lineup for the first time in two weeks (after battling pneumonia) and scored three goals in the team's loss at San Diego State. Stewart, who led the club in scoring last year, has 12 goals this season, fourth on the team, despite playing in just nine of the 15 games. Stewart has scored on 39% of her shots and is third on the team with 10 steals. GARCIA CONTINUES TO BOIL Three-time All-American Angelica Garcia (Catano, PR) has scored in 13 of the team's 15 contests this year, including each of the last five contests. Garcia leads the club with 30 goals and has 179 in her four-year career, five behind all-time leader Ashley Richardson. Garcia has scored at a team-best 57% clip and is third on the team with 17 steals. HAWKINS CLOSING IN ON RECORD Junior Goalie Bri Hawkins (San Diego), with 105 saves this season and 520 in her career, is just 32 saves away from tying all-time leader Amanda Wightman's 552 career saves. Hawkins is coming off a season-best 11 saves against SDSU last weekend. Hawkins has allowed just a smidge under five goals a game this season. WAWRZYNSKI CLOSING IN ON CENTURY MARK Junior Drue Wawrzynski (Garden Grove) with 94 career goals is just six goals away from becoming the sixth player in school history to top the century mark in career goals. So far this year, Wawrzynski has scored 23 goals, second-best on the squad. Wawrzynski is scoring at a 49% clip. AZEVEDO ON A HOT STREAK Sophomore Cassie Azevedo (Long Beach) has scored 14 of her 21 goals over the past six contests giving her 60 in her two-year career. Azevedo also ranks second on the team in steals with 23 and has a team-best 14 assists. Azevedo has scored at a 34% clip so far this season. CAMPBELL CONTINUES STEAL STREAK Sophomore Tara Campbell (Quebec) has nearly equaled her steal total from last year (28) with 27 steals so far this season. Campbell has had at least one steal in each of the team's first 15 contests. |
