Aztecs Edge Beach 10-9 in Key MPSF Match SAN DIEGO, CA-- Aztec Goalie Ashley Zabel stopped Cassie Azevedo's shot with 30 seconds left as No. 5-ranked San Diego State (17-3, 6-1 MPSF) edged No. 4-ranked Long Beach State 10-9 (11-4, 2-2 MPSF) in a key Mountain Pacific Sports Federation contest on Sunday afternoon. Sandy Onweller's fourth goal of the afternoon proved to be the game-winner, as the senior's skip shot with 1:43 left gave SDSU a 10-8 lead, as Alison Braden would score the final tally, at 1:19, to close the deficit to 10-9, but LBSU would get no closer after opening up the contest by leading 2-0. Roberta Stewart had three goals for The Beach, while Azevedo and Angelica Garcia tallied two goals a piece. Bri Hawkins tallied nine saves in net, while Zabel had four saves for SDSU. It was the first full weekend back for Stewart, who missed the previous two weeks with the flu. "It was a poor game for us. When you go 0-for-8 on 6-on-5's, you can't succeed and win. This loss made things very difficult in the standings, but we're just going to have to work harder," said Head Coach Ricardo Azevedo. "San Diego State played well and they proved again, they are hard to beat at home." In the first period, Garcia's goal and Stewart's penalty shot gave LBSU a 2-0 lead with 3:19 left in the first, before the Aztecs would score four unanswered to lead 4-2 with 3:13 left in the half, capped off by Onweller's first goal of the afternoon. The 49ers would make a run before the half to tie it at 4-4, before Onweller's second goal gave SDSU a 5-4 lead at the half. Azevedo would tie it at 6-6 with 3:34 left in the third period, but two straight goals by SDSU put the Aztecs up 8-6 with 1:55 left. Azevedo's shot from halfcourt with three seconds left in the third period brought LBSU to within 8-7, but a power-play goal from Rachel Serna at 3:39 in the fourth put SDSU up 9-7. Garcia briefly brought LBSU to within 9-8 with 2:04 left, but Onweller answered 21 seconds later to put the game away. The 49ers return home for two straight, hosting Arizona State on Saturday, March 20 at noon and then USC in a contest on March 27.
