49ers Defeat No. 51 Marshall, 4-3 Tabatruong's Victory At No. 6 Singles Seals Victory
March 14, 2004 LONG BEACH, CA-- For the second straight day the fate of the match came down to a final singles match for the Long Beach State women's tennis team. On Saturday, sophomore Alanah Carroll won at the No. 5 spot to secure a 4-3 win over Loyola Marymount. On Sunday, freshman Emmanuelle Tabatruong won at the No. 6 position to give the 49ers a 4-3 win over No. 51-ranked Marshall. The 49ers, who are ranked No. 64 in the country, have won six matches in a row to improve to 8-5 overall.
At No. 6 singles Tabatruong defeated Marshall's Danielle Hock, 6-4, 6-7, 6-4 to earn the 4-3 victory. Long Beach won four of the six singles matches after losing the doubles point to begin the day. At No. 1 singles, Nicole Bouffler won 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 over Jessica Johnson. At No. 2 singles senior Kelly Chan won 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 over Alice Sukner and at No. 5 singles, Carroll defeated Joelle Good 6-4, 6-4.
Marshall (8-3), which saw its eight-match win streak snapped with the defeat, began the day by winning two of the three doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles, Johnson and Ashley Kroh won 8-3 over Bouffler and Sandra Rocha. At the No. 2 spot the 49ers Chan and Carroll won 9-8 over Lillie Nzudie and Sukner, while at No. 3 doubles Hock and Megan Skalsky won 8-3 over Lindsey Marvel and Krystina Katayama.
The 49ers are home next week when they take on No. 75 Utah on Friday, March 19 at 2 pm and No. 70 Nebraska on Saturday, March 20 at 11 am.
