49ers Travel South For Two No. 4-ranked Beach Head to San Diego For Two
March 10, 2004 FULL STATISTICS BEACH HEAD TO SAN DIEGO FOR TWO The No. 4-ranked Long Beach State women's water polo team (10-3, 2-1) will travel to America's Finest City for two contests this weekend, traveling to UC San Diego for an affair at 3 p.m. on Saturday, before traveling to San Diego State for a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation contest on Sunday at noon. The Aztecs enter the week at 13-3, their best start in school history. UCSD enters the week at 9-11. The Beach are coming off a clean sweep of UC Irvine and CS Northridge this past weekend. LBSU has won five of seven. AZEVEDO AT THE HELM Ricardo Azevedo is in his fifth year as head coach of both the men's and women's programs, compiling a 73-66 record in five years with the men and a 87-60 record in four-plus years with the women. On the women's side, LBSU has set school-records for wins in three of his four seasons, including last year's remarkable 24-8 record. He was named the co-MPSF Coach of the Year in 2002. He is also an assistant with the Men's National Team, which features his son, Tony, one of the world's top players. LAST WEEK'S RECAP The 49ers made it a clean sweep last Sunday, defeating UC Irvine 8-4 in a MPSF matchup before taking care of CS Northridge 9-4. Cassie Azevedo tallied six goals over two games, while Bri Hawkins continued her stellar play in the net, allowing just two goals over seven periods, while picking up 10 saves. A WHOLE LOT OF FIRE POWER For the past two seasons the 49ers have shown a knack for scoring from a lot of different angles. Six players have at least nine goals this season, led by Angelica Garcia's 26 tallies. Over the team's first 13 contests, LBSU has had six different leading scorers. STEWART REMAINS OUT Two-time first team All-American Roberta Stewart (Auckland, NZ) has missed virtually the past two weeks, battling pneumonia. Stewart as the 49ers leading scorer last year, has scored nine goals in 21 attempts for a .429 shooting percentage over seven games this season. HAWKINS RETURNS HOME, AGAIN Junior goalie Bri Hawkins (San Diego) will return to her hometown for the second time this season when The Beach travel to San Diego this weekend. Hawkins and the 49er defense have allowed a miniscal 4.3 goals per game, tallying 86 saves, which was leading the MPSF.
GARCIA KEEPS FIRING AWAY Three-time All-American Angelica Garica (Catano, Puerto Rico) has scored a team-best 26 goals this season, leading the team in scoring six times. Garcia has scored at a team-best .578 percentage, along with tallying 16 steals. WAWR WITH WORDS Junior Drue Wawrzynski (Garden Grove) has scored 20 goals so far this season, shooting at a .476 percentage. Wawrzynski has led the team in scoring four times this year, including a team-best three against the Aztecs as part of the UC San Diego Tournament to begin the year. AZEVEDO KEEPS COOKING Sophomore Cassie Azevedo (Long Beach) tallied six scores last weekend and is currently third on the squad with 18 goals. Azevedo is also second on the team in assists with 11 and second in steals with 21. Azevedo has led the team in scoring in two of the past three contests. TARA KEEPS STEALING THEM AWAY Sophomore Tara Campbell (Quebec) has stolen one away in each of the first 13 contests for The Beach this season. Campbell currently leads the club with 22 takeaways. Campbell has started 11 of 13 games this year. |
