49ers Head To Hawai'i Beach Takes On BYU-Hawai'i, Michigan, Hawai'i
PDF VERSION OF THIS RELEASE February 25, 2004 The Records: The Long Beach State women's tennis team hits the road this week when they play three matches in Hawai'i. On thursday the 49ers tangle with BYU, Hawai'i, on Friday it's No. 19-ranked Michigan and the weekend concludes on Saturday with a match against the host University of Hawai'i. The 49ers, who are ranked No. 65 in the nation in the latest ITA Rankings (2/24), are 2-4 on the season.
The Coach: Jenny Hilt-Costello (UCLA, 1994) is 85-60 (.586) in her seventh year as the head coach at Long Beach State. Hilt-Costello has led the 49ers to three consecutive appearances in the Big West Tournament Championship match, winning the crown in 2002.
The Series: The 49ers trail in their series with BYU-Hawai'i by a 1-0 count. The lone meeting came in 1997 in Hawai'i, a 7-2 victory for BYU-Hawai'i. The 49ers have never played Michigan and are -7 all-time vs. Hawai'i. The 49ers have won the last six meetings with the Rainbows, including a 6-1 win last year in Moscow, ID.
Playing The Best: Of the 22 NCAA Division I programs on the 2004 49er spring schedule, 14 are currently ranked in the Top 75 by ITA Tennis. Listed in order of the latest rankings are: USC (12), Michigan (19), Oregon (24), Pepperdine (29), San Diego State (34), Sacramento State (56), Cal Poly (61), Nebraska (67), Loyola Marymount (68), UC Irvine (69), Marshall (74), Brown (T75), UC Riverside (T75) and Utah (T75).
Beach Wins First Two: The 49ers picked up their first two wins of the season when they defeated CS Fullerton (Feb. 14) and UC Irvine (Feb. 15) at the Campus Courts. On Saturday the 49ers earned a 7-0 sweep over CS Fullerton. Long Beach won all three doubles matches for the first time this season, and then came back to win each singles match in straight sets. Nicole Bouffler was impressive at the No. 1 spot with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Ruya Inapulat. On Sunday the 49ers defeated No. 65 UC Irvine, 5-2. For the second straight day the 49ers won all three doubles matches and then won four of the six singles matches. Although losing at the No. 1 and 2 positions, the 49ers got strong performances in spots three through six. Senior Kelly Chan won 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 3 spot over Hui Leow and Claudia Argumedo won at No. 6 6-1, 6-2 over Veronica Fermin.
Carroll Solid At No. 5: Sophomore Alanah Carroll (Belrose, NSW, Australia) has won four of her last five singles matches at the No. 5 spot and is 4-2 this spring. Carroll earned a tough 7-5, 7-6 (3) win over Pepperdine's Eva Dickes on January 24. She then defeated CSUF's Carla Rocha 6-4, 6-2, UCI's Christie Posner 6-4, 6-2 and Sacramento State's Ann Roslund, 6-3, 6-0. Her lone loss in the recent stretch was a 6-4, 7-5 loss to Alesya Vidov of San DIego State.
Chan Moves Up The Charts: Senior Kelly Chan (Kailua-Kona, HI) is steadily moving up in the 49er record books. With eight wins in doubles matches this year she now has 53 career doubles wins, a mark which ranks third all-time at LBSU. The school record is 63 career doubles wins done by Havaja Frljuckic (1984-87). Chan also has a combined 81 overall wins (singles & doubles) to rank No. 12 all time.
Rocha Steps Up: True freshman Sandra Rocha (Pomona) has been playing some pretty good tennis lately. Rocha has won her last three singles matches at the No. 4 position. Last weekend she rallied from one set down to defeat Sacramento State's Marta Gronowicz 2-6, 6-2, 6-1. Rocha is 3-3 this spring in singles play. In doubles, she teams with Nicole Bouffler at the No. 1 position and that pair is 3-3, having also won three in a row. Last weekend the duo won 8-6 over Sacramento State's Karnaukhova/Gronowicz.
