LBSU Falls To Sacramento State
No. 55-Ranked Hornets Defeat No. 61-Ranked 49ers, 5-2
February 20, 2004 LONG BEACH, CA-- The Sacramento State women's tennis team defeated Long Beach State 5-2 on a chilly afternoon at the 49er Campus Courts. The Hornets (7-3) are ranked No. 55 in the country and feature two nationally-ranked singles players. The 49ers, who are ranked No. 61 in the nation, fell to 2-4 with the defeat.
In singles play the Hornets rode the play of their two nationally-ranked players. At the No. 1 position, Margarita Karnaukhova, ranked No. 45 nationally, defeated the 49ers Nicole Bouffler, 6-1, 7-6 (2). At No. 2 singles, Anna Erikson, ranked No. 53, defeated Lindsey Marvel, 6-2, 6-0.
The 49ers two wins came at the No. 4 and No. 5 positions. Sandra Rocha won at No. 4 singles, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 over Marta Gronowicz. Carroll, playing at No. 5 singles, won 6-3, 6-0 over Ann Roslund. The other two singles matches saw Sacramento State's Roberts Fessenko win 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3 over Kelly Chan and at No. 6, Cecilia Helland won 6-2, 6-4 over Claudia Argumedo.
The Hornets began the afternoon by winning two of three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. The 49ers won at No. 1 doubles as Bouffler and Rocha won 8-6 over Karnaukhova/Gronowicz. At No. 2 doubles Roslund/Erikson won 8-2 over Marvel/Carroll and at the No. 3 spot Helland/Fessenko won 8-6 over Chan and Emmanuelle Tabatruong.
The 49ers will next be in action on Thursday, February 26 when they play at BYU-Hawai'i. On Friday they tangle with Michigan over on the islands of Hawai'i and on Saturday they play the University of Hawai'i.
