49ers Win Two On Sunday Beach Defeats Queens College and Johns Hopkins
September 7, 2003 Annapolis, MD-- The Long Beach State men's water polo team improved to 4-1 on the young season with two wins on Sunday at the Navy Open Tournament. In its opener, the 49ers got past Queens College 10-6 and then closed out the tournament with a 15-5 rout of Johns Hopkins.
In the opening game, the 49ers spotted Queens a 2-0 first quarter lead, but came back to tie the game at the half, 4-4. Junior Erik Geoffroy, who tallied four goals in the game, scored his third goal at the 1:39 mark of the third quarter, giving LBSU the lead for good at 7-6. In the fourth quarter the Beach out-scored Queens 3-0 as Geoffroy, John Filipponi and Riley Brady all tallied goals. Sophomore Brad Scoles added two goals to the 49er attack.
In the second game it was all Long Beach State as the 49ers raced to a 4-1 lead after one quarter and 6-1 advantage at the half. Brady, a redshirt freshman from El Segundo, had a career-high three goals as nine different 49ers tallied goals in the victory. True freshman John Foster, out of Wilson High School in Long Beach, scored his first goal as a 49er, finding the back of the net at the 1:06 mark in the third quarter. The 49ers scored six goals in the third quarter.
The 49ers will be at home next Sunday, Sept. 14, when they play host to their Alumni team at 12 pm at the Campus Pool. The next regular season game will be on Saturday, Sept. 20 when the 49ers compete in the annual SoCal Tournament at UC Irvine.
