49ers Start Season With Two Wins
LBSU Falls To Navy In Nightcap
September 6, 2003 Annapolis, MD-- The 49er men's water polo team opened up its 2003 season with a 2-1 mark in the first day of the 2003 Navy Open. The 49ers began the day with an 8-5 win over Iona and the followed that with a 10-8 win over St. Francis (NY). In their final game of the day, The Beach dropped a tough 12-10 decision to host Navy.
In the opener, junior Erik Geoffroy scored three goals and senior Nathan Allard added two as The Beach won 8-5. LBSU took a 3-1 lead after one quarter and then put up four goals in the third quarter to seal the win. Jason Palda, Brad Scoles and freshman Reid Tomassi all added goals for LBSU. Kamil Kulczycki led Iona with four goals.
In the second game Geoffroy once again led the offensive attack with three goals as the 49ers won 10-8 over St. Francis. Scoles, Tomassi and James Durley all chipped in with two goals for The Beach. The 49ers and Terriers played to a 6-6 tie at the half, but LBSU outscored St. Francis 3-1 in the third quarter to come away with the win.
Navy took control in the fourth quarter to win the final game of the day, 12-10. Tied at 8-8 after three quarters, the Midshipmen scored three consecutive goals to take an 11-8 lead. A David Del Grande goal at 1:24 cut the deficit to 11-9, but Navy would hold on from there. Geoffroy led The Beach with three goals, while Allard and Del Grande scored twice.
The 49ers will continue play in the 2003 Navy Open on Sunday as they take on Queens College at 10:05 am and Johns Hopkins at 1:35 pm.
