49ers Defeat UCLA, 9-5
Erik Geoffroy Scores Four Goals In Victory
September 21, 2003 Irvine, CA-- Junior Erik Geoffroy scored three of his game-high four goals in the first half as No. 8 Long Beach State defeated fifth-ranked UCLA 9-5 in a consolation semifinal Sunday morning. The 49ers, who never trailed, improved to 6-2 with the victory. Sophomore goalie Thomas Onyshko recorded a career-high 16 saves in the victory. Junior Brett Ormsby led UCLA with a pair of second-quarter goals.
The 49ers jumped out to a 3-1 lead after one quarter and never looked back for their second consecutive win over the Bruins. Last year the 49ers defeated UCLA 6-5 in an MPSF game at UCLA. The Bruins had won 20 consecutive games over the 49ers until last season's win. Blake Bartak added two goals for the 49ers and Jason Palda, Nathan Allard and David Del Grande tallied one each. The 49ers put the game away by out-scoring the Bruins 3-0 in the third quarter, turning a 5-3 halftime advantage into an 8-3 lead.
In the 5th place game, UCSD's Kevin Smoker scored his only goal of the game with 1:12 left in regulation to give sixth-ranked UC San Diego fifth place in the tournament with an 11-10 win over the 49ers. Geoffroy and John Foster had scored goals late in the third quarter to give the 49ers a 9-7 lead heading into the final period. Long Beach still led 10-8 with 5:54 remaining on a goal by Allard, but Jonathan Hopkins' fifth goal of the game at 5:34 and a score by Brandon Borso with 1:48 left pulled the Tritons even to set up Smoker's game-winning goal. UCSD improved to 7-3 with the win while the 49ers are 6-3.
