49ers Head To SoCal Tournament Beach Ranked #8 In Nation
September 16, 2003 The Record: The #8-ranked Long Beach State men's water polo team will be in action this weekend when they compete at the SoCal Tournament at UC Irvine, The 49ers, 4-1 on the year, will tangle with UC Irvine at 7 am and then play USC at 3:40 pm. Tournament play will continue on Sunday beginning at 7 am. The Coach: Rick Azevedo is 62-52 (.544) in his fifth year as the head coach at Long Beach State. Azevedo was a busy man this summer as one of the assistant coach's for the U.S. Men's National Team. He traveled with the team to eight different countries over a span of 63 days. The trip culminated with a gold medal at the Pan American Games in the Dominican Republic. SoCal Tournament: There will be 12 teams competing this weekend at UCI in the annual SoCal Tournament. The 49ers are paired ina tough bracket along with UC Irvine and USC. Each team will play four games over the two-day tournament. Last year the 49ers went 1-3 defeating UC San Diego (7-5) in its first game, but then falling to Stanford (10-6), UCLA (4-2) and Pepperdine (10-6).
Group A (USC, UC Irvine, LBSU) Group B (Stanford, UC San Diego, UCSB) Group C (Cal, LMU, Pacific) Group D (Pepperdine, UCLA, Cal Baptist) Alumni Game: This past Sunday the 49ers tangled with an Alumni team at the Campus Pool. The Alumni, with five goals in the fourth quarter, came out on top 10-8. Former U.S. Olympians Doug Kimbell and Chi Kredell were in the starting lineup for the Alumni. Kimbell scored twice for the Alumni, while Nathan Allard scored twice for the current 49ers. even 49er head coach Rick Azevedo donned a swim suit and participated for the Alumni squad. Geoffroy Earns National Honor: Erik Geoffroy was named on September 10 as NCAAsports.com's first "Athlete of the Week." The website is beginning a new program to honor student-athletes and Geoffroy has the distinction of being the first-ever winner. The feature article appeared on Thursday, September 11 on www.ncaasports.com. Geoffroy Off To A Hot Start: Junior Erik Geoffroy had a great start tot he 2003 season as he scored 15 goals in the five games at the Navy Open. Geoffroy scored at least two goals in every game, including a season-high four goals in the 10-6 win over Queens College. On Saturday he scored three goals in each game. Last year Geoffroy led the 49ers with 69 goals scored, the fourth-best single season mark in 49er history. Freshman Tomassi Impresses: True freshman Reid Tomassi had a strong weekend in his first games. Tomassi tallied seven goals in the five games, including scoring three goals in the win over Johns Hopkins. Tomassi's, who tallied two goals vs. St. Francis, second goal vs. St. Francis, at the 2:04 mark of the third quarter, put the 49ers on top to stay in the 0-8 victory. Tomassi comes to LBSU from Winter Park, FL where he scored 107 goals his senior season and earned first team All-America honors. Onyshko In Goal: Sophomore Thomas Onyshko started in goal for all five games of the tournament and finished with a 7.11 goals allowed average while averaging 6.89 saves per game. Onyshko, who started the final seven games of the 2002 season, tallied 31 saves in the four and a half games. Onyshko didn't play the second half vs. Johns Hopkins as Michail Konstas was in the net. Onyshko tallied a season-high 12 saves in Saturday's 10-8 win over St. Francis. Brady Comes Up Big: Sophomore Riley Brady had his best day as a 49er in the 49ers 15-5 win over Johns Hopkins on Sunday. Brady had a career-high three goals in the win and had a total of four goals over the weekend. Brady appeared in 15 games last season as a true freshman, scoring two goals on the year, one each vs. Bucknell and Occidental. Scoles An Offensive Threat: Sophomore Brad Scoles scored six goals in the five games and is establishing himself as a scoring threat for The Beach. Last year as a true freshman, Scoles played in all 33 games, starting 19 times, but scored just eight goals on the year. Scoles scored two goals against both St. Francis and Queens College and tallied one goal vs. Navy and Iona.
On The Career Scoring Chart: Senior Nathan Allard has scored 93 goals in his 49er career, placing him at #17 on the LBSU career chart. With seven more goals he will become just the 16th player in 49er history to tally at least 100 career goals. Junior Erik Geoffroy has 87 career goals, leaving him #18 all-time at LBSU.
Navy Open Roundup: The 49er offense was in high gear as they scored 53 goals in the five games at the Navy Open. After scoring eight goals in the opening win over Iona, the 49ers put up double-digits totals in the next four games. Erik Geoffroy led the 49ers with 15 goals for the weekend, freshman Reid Tomassi had seven while Nathan Allard and Brad Scoles both had six goals.
