LONG BEACH, CA -- The Long Beach State women's tennis team dropped its first match to a Big West Conference opponent this year as Cal Poly defeated the #71-ranked 49ers 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at the 49er Campus Courts. Long Beach falls to 12-7 overall and 6-1 vs. Big West Conference opponents. Cal Poly, which is ranked #64 in the country, improved to 16-6 overall and 7-1 vs. Big West teams.
Cal Poly began the day by winning two of the three doubles matches, earning the doubles point. The 49er duo of Alena Kovalchuk and Lindsey Marvel defeated Danielle Hustedt and Kate Romm, 8-5, at the #1 position. The Mustangs would prevail at the #2 and #3 spots though. Samantha Waller and Teresa Galido won at #2 over Laura Thomas and Kelly Chan, 8-6, while Kristen Grady and Chelsy Thompson defeated Alanah Carroll and Claudia Arguemdo at #3, 8-6.
Singles action saw the two teams split the six matches. Kovalchuk picked up an impresive 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win over Hustedt at the #1 position. Other 49er winners were Marvel at #3 singles, 5-7, 7-6, 10-4 over Thompson and Chan at the #5 spot, 6-3, 6-4 over Romm.
The 49ers are next in action on Friday, April 11 when they play at Cal State Fullerton at 1 pm.
