LONG BEACH, CA--The Long Beach State women's tennis team improved to 12-6 overall and 6-0 vs. Big West Conference opponents with a 4-3 win over visiting UC Santa Barbara on Saturday afternoon at the Campus Courts. The 49ers are ranked #71 in the country in the latest ITA Rankings.
The day was highlighted by an inspiring doubles match between the 49ers Laura Thomas and Kelly Chan and UCSB's Andrea Pintar and Leslie Damion at the #2 position. Pintar and Damion had rolled to a 7-4 lead, but the 49ers fought back. Long Beach was able to break serve three times (4-7, 6-7, 8-7) and win the final five games en route to a 9-7 comeback victory. The 49ers withstood three match points at 7-5, but were able to break through and win that game to pull to within 7-6. The final three games were owned by the 49ers, as none of the final three games reached deuce. LBSU won the doubles point as Claudia Argumedo and Alanah Carroll won 8-5 at #3 doubles over Jen Kuhle and Chelsea Dillon. UCSB won at #1 doubles, as Uzma Khan and Marielle Gruenig defeated Alena Kovalchuk and Lindsey Marvel, 9-7.
In singles action, the 49ers and Gauchos split the six matches. For LBSU, Argumedo won 7-6, 6-2 at the #4 slot over Damion. Chan won at #5 singles, 6-3, 6-2 over Kuhle and Carroll prevailed at the #6 slot, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 over Amy Uyhnis. Carroll has won 12 of her last 13 singles matches this spring.
UCSB won at the one, two and three singles spots. Khan raced to a 6-2, 6-0 win over the 49ers Kovalchuk at #1 singles. Gruenig won 6-4, 6-3 over Thomas at #2 and Pintar won 6-3, 6-3 over Marvel at #3 singles.
The 49ers are in action on Sunday, April 6 when they host #64-ranked Cal Poly at 11 am at the 49er Campus Courts.
