DANVILLE, CA -- The Long Beach State women's tennis team was denied a second straight Big West Championship and NCAA Tournament bid when they fell to Cal Poly, 4-1, in the the championship match on Sunday afternoon at Blackhawk Country Club in Danville. Cal Poly improved to 20-6 on the season and earns the league's automatic NCAA bid, while the 49ers fall to 15-8 and have to hope for an at-large bid when the NCAA participants are announced on April 30.
The Mustangs jumped up early as they won two of the three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. Danielle Hustedt and Kate Romm won at #1 doubles, 8-3, over the 49er duo of Alena Kovalchuk and Lindsey Marvel. At #3 doubles, Kristen Grady and Chelsey Thompson won 8-1 over Claudia Argumedo and Alanah Carroll.
In singles play, the Mustangs needed to win just three matches to get the victory. Cal Poly won at the #2, #5 and #6 spots, while the 49ers won at #3. Samantha Waller picked up a 6-2, 0-6, 6-4 win at #2 singles over the 49ers Laura Thomas. Sheila Lewis won at #5, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 over Kelly Chan and Romm won at #6, 6-3, 6-2 over Carroll. The lone 49er win came at #3 as Marvel defeted Thompson, 6-3, 6-4.
This was the third consecutive appearance in the Big West Championship match for the 49ers. Long Beach won the title last year, but fell in 2001 to Boise State. This is Cal Poly's first Big West women's tennis championship.
