49ers Finish Best Season Ever in 4th Place Beach Finish Season 24-8, 4th at the Conference Championships
PALO ALTO, CA-- No. 4-ranked Long Beach State (24-8) finished off its most successful season ever, in fourth place at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships, losing 10-5 to USC in the consolation match. It is the second straight year The Beach have finished in fourth place. The Beach fell behind 4-1 after the first period, before mounting a rally in the third period scoring three times to close to within 7-4, but the Trojans added three in the final frame to put the game away. This season, the 49ers set school records for wins (24), winning percentage (.750), conference triumphs (8) and home victories (11-1), as captain Ashley Richardson finished her career with a school-record 184 goals. Sophomore Roberta Stewart, who had three goals in the tournament, led the team in scoring for the second straight season with 48 scores, ninth-best in a single season and 113 career goals, fifth-best all-time. Junior Angelica Garica, who had two goals in the Bay Area, finished with 38 this season and 149 in her three-year career, third-best all-time. Drue Wawrzysnki also had 38 goals this season and has 72 in her two-year career, eight-best all-time. Cassie Azvedo, who had five goals in the tournament, finished second on the team with 39 goals. Bri Hawkins' 232 saves this season fell four saves shy of Amanda Wightman's 2001 record of 236, as Hawkins will have to settle for the second-best single season total.
