The Records: Long Beach State enters the 2003 Big West Championships with an overall record of 13-7, while being ranked #62 in the country. The 49ers are the #2 seed this year. Last season the 49ers were the #1 seed. The 49ers will take on the winner of Thursday's Idaho/CS Fullerton match on Friday at 8 am. The Big West Championships are being held for the first time at Blackhawk Country Club in Danville, CA.
The Coach: Head Coach Jenny Hilt (UCLA, 1994) is 81-55 (.596) in her sixth year at Long Beach State. She was selected the 2001 Big West Conference Coach of the Year. Hilt has a 7-5 record in five appearances at the Big West Championships.
2003 Big West Championships: The 2003 Championships will be held at Blackhawk Country Club in Danville, CA. Action begins on Thursday as #7 seed Idaho takes on #10 seed CS Fullerton and #8 seed UC Riverside takes on #9 seed Utah State. On Friday quarterfinal action will begin. Number four CS Northridge will play #5 UCSB, #3 UC Irvine will play #6 Pacific, #1 Cal Poly will take on the winner between UC Riverside/Utah State and Long Beach State, the #2 seed, will play the winner of Thursday's Idaho/CS Fullerton match. Saturday will be the semifinals, with the championship scheduled for 12 pm on Sunday. 2002 Big West Champions: Long Beach State won its first-ever Big west Women's Tennis Championship in 2002 at Ojai. The 49ers downed UCSB in the quarterfinals, 4-1, then bounced CS Northridge in the semifinals, 4-2. In the championship match, Long Beach defeated UC Irvine 4-2 for its first league title. In 2001 the 49ers advanced to the tournament championship, only to fall to Boise State, 4-3. Alena Kovalchuk: Junior Alena Kovalchuk won her lone match of the week as she defeated Ruya Inalpulat of CS Fullerton 6-2, 6-1. Kovalchuk has compiled an 11-2 singles mark at the #1 position and has won nine of her 11 matches in straight sets. She won her first seven matches of the spring season before falling to Jemima Hayward of Boise State on March 27, 4-6, 6-2, 5-7. Kovalchuk went 5-1 vs. Big West opponents this year, with her only loss a 2-6, 0-6 decision to UCSB's Uzma Khan. Laura Thomas: Sophomore Laura Thomas won her final regular season match with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Adriana Hockicko of CS Fullerton. Thomas is 10-10 this spring in singles, going 2-5 at the #1 spot and 8-5 at #2. She has struggled lately in singles, having lost four of her last singles matches.
Lindsey Marvel: Junior Lindsey Marvel defeated CS Fullerton's Ioana Sisoe 6-3, 6-1 in her final regular season match. Marvel, who has won seven of her last eight singles matches, compiled a spring singles mark of 13-7. She was 4-1 at the #2 spot and 9-6 at #3. Including the fall season, Marvel was 7-4 in singles play against Big West Conference opponents.
Claudia Argumedo: Sophomore Claudia Argumedo finished her spring play with a 10-6 singles mark, including a 6-3, 6-1 win over CSUF's Brittany Minna on April 11. Argumedo is 6-5 at the #4 position, 2-1 at #5 and 2-0 at #6. Including fall play, Argumedo was 6-2 vs. Big West Conference opponents this season. One of those defeats came when she had to default due to a bee sting (March 30 vs. Urska Dvorsek of Pacific). Kelly Chan: Junior Kelly Chan had an outstanding spring for the 49ers as she compiled a singles mark of 13-7. Chan was 1-4 at the #4 spot, but settled in at #5 singles and was 10-2. Chan, who defeated CS Fullerton's Caroline freeman 6-4, 6-1 in her last match, has won four singles matches in a row, seven of her last eight and 11 of her last 13. Chan went 7-1 vs. Big West opponents this spring, falling only to Brittany Bierman of CS Northridge, 6-4, 2-6, 5-7. In her last four losses, three have gone to three sets. She has only lost once in straight sets in her last 17 singles matches. Alanah Carroll: Freshman Alanah Carroll has had a great spring season for the 49ers as she is 15-5 in singles action. Carroll is 4-1 at the #5 spot and 11-4 at #6 singles. She had a streak of nine consecutive victories from Feb. 9 to Mar. 22. She is 7-1 vs. Big West opponents and has won 13 of her last 15 singles matches. Her only conference loss was a three-set loss (2-6, 6-4, 3-6) to Sheila Lewis of Cal Poly. Kovalchuk/Marvel: The #1 doubles team of Marvel/Kovalchuk are 10-3 this spring in singles play. The duo are 8-3 at the #1 spot and 2-0 at #2 doubles. They have won their last two matches, defeated Hustedt/Romm of Cal Poly 8-5 and Inalpulat/Sisoe of CS Fullerton 8-0. They are 4-2 vs. Big West opponents this year.
Chan/Thomas: The #2 doubles team of Kelly Chan and Laura Thomas went 6-2 in the spring. Their first match together was on March 21, an 8-3 win over Spirta/Botkova of UTEP. They went 3-1 vs. Big West opponents in the spring with their only defeat coming to Waller/Galido of Cal Poly, 8-6. On April 5 they pulled out an impressive 9-7 win over Pintar/Damion of UCSB. The 49er due trailed 7-4 and came back to win the final five games. That win was crucial, because the 49ers won the doubles point and eventually won the match by a 4-3 score.
Argumedo/Carroll: Argumedo and Carroll played their first match as a duo on March 21. They were 4-3 in doubles at the #3 position, recording a 2-1 record vs. Big West opponents. The pair defeated Freeman/Martin of CS Fullerton, 8-5, and Kuhle/Dillon of UCSB, 8-5. All three of their defeats have been by identical 8-6 scores.
