The Records: Long Beach State won both of its matches last week as they swept past UTEP and Portland, both by 7-0 scores. The 49ers are 9-5 overall and will host three matches this week when Boise State visits on Thursday, Brown on Saturday and Pacific on Sunday. The 49ers are ranked #69 this week. Boise State is ranked #61 in the country.
The Coach: Head Coach Jenny Hilt (UCLA, 1994) is 77-53 (.592) in her sixth year in charge of the 49er program. She was selected as the 2001 Big West Conference Coach of the Year and has led The Beach to back-to-back 20-plus win seasons.
Series Records: The 49ers are 1-9 lifetime vs. Boise State. last season the 49ers lost at BSU, 5-2. The lone win came in the 2001 regular season, a 7-0 victory at LBSU. The Broncos have won the last two meetings, including a 4-3 win in the finals of the 2001 Big West Tournament. Long Beach leads its series with Brown by a 3-1 count. The last meeting came in 2000, an 8-1 49er triumph. Long Beach trails its series with Pacific by a 10-5 count. The 49ers have won the last two meetings, including a 6-1 win at Stockton last season.
Beach Downs UTEP: The 49ers swept past UTEP on Friday afternoon, 7-0. The 49ers won all six singles matches in straight sets and won two of the three doubles matches. Alena Kovalchuk remained perfect in singles with a 6-4, 6-2 win at the #1 spot over Kendall Exelby.
49ers Rout Portland: On Saturday the 49ers swept their second straight opponent, defeating Portland, 7-0. This time the 49ers won every singles and doubles match. In singles, the 49ers won all six matches in straight sets. At #2 doubles, the 49er duo of Laura Thomas and Kelly Chan battled back from a 7-1 deficit to win 9-7.
Kovalchuk Still Perfect: Newcomer Alena Kovalchuk continued her win streak this past weekend with two victories. Kovalchuk improved to 7-0 at the #1 singles spots with wins over Kendall Exelby of UTEP (6-4, 6-2) and Amy Juppenlatz of Portland (6-1, 6-1). Kovalchuk has won six of her seven matches in straight sets. The only time she was extended to three sets was against Rice's Lauren Archer, as Kovalchuk rallied for a set down to win 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (4). Kovalchuk transferred to LBSU in January from UT-San Antonio.
Thomas Wins Two: Sophomore Laura Thomas (London, England) won both of her matches this past week to improve to 8-6 in singles, including a 6-1 mark at the #2 spot. Thomas defeated Martina Rezar of UTEP, 6-1, 6-3 and Kaori Tanabe of Portland, 6-2, 6-4. Thomas has won eight of her last nine singles matches, including her biggest win of the season when she defeated Rice's Blair DiSesa, 6-4, 7-6 (3). DiSesa was ranked #106 in the country in the ITA Singles Rankings.
Marvel Looks Strong: Junior Lindsey Marvel won both of her matches last week in fine fashion. Friday she routed Tea Spirta of UTEP, 6-0, 6-1. Saturday she defeated Sanja Indic of Portland, 6-1, 6-1. Marvel has won four of her last five singles matches and is 8-6 in singles this spring. Marvel is now playing at the #3 spot.
Argumedo Steps Into Lineup: Sophomore Claudia Argumedo has stepped into the starting singles lineup due to the departure of Megan Biorkman and has performed extremely well. Argumedo has won her last four matches, including two wins this past weekend at the #4 singles spot. Friday she downed JoJo Furdyna of UTEP, 6-3, 6-2 and on Saturday she defeated Alyson Tyson of Portland, 6-1, 6-1. Argumedo is 7-3 in singles action this spring.
Chan On A Roll: Junior Kelly Chan has performed extremely well at the #5 singles spot this spring. Chan has won six of her last seven matches, with her lone loss coming at #4 singles to Pamela Fernandez of Central Florida, 6-4, 6-3. This weekend she Elise Bjorklund of UTEP, 6-4, 6-1 and Kelly Menke of Portland, 6-1, 6-1.
Carroll Win Streak Up To Nine: Freshman Alanah Carroll is currently 11-3 in singles action this season, having won her last nine matches. Carroll is 4-1 at the #5 spot and 7-2 at #6 singles. Last week she defeated Adi Botkova of UTEP, 6-3, 6-3 and Dierdre Ring-Marrinson of Portland, 6-0, 6-2. Carroll has not lost since a Feb. 8 defeat to Washington State's Anna Stefanchuk, 6-4, 6-4.
Argumedo Steps Into Action: Sophomore Claudia Argumedo (San Salvador, El Salvador) saw action on Friday vs. Central Florida and won her singles match, 6-0, 6-1 over Amira Samara. Argumedo has won her last two singles matches as she defeated Lindsey Lipvinoff of UC Riverside 6-0, 6-1 on March 8. Argumedo is 5-3 this spring in singles.
Kovalchuk/Marvel: The #1 doubles team of Marvel/Kovalchuk improved to 7-0 overall this spring with two wins last week. The duo is 5-0 at the #1 spot and 2-0 at #2. Last week they defeated Exelby/Rezar of UTEP, 8-3, and Juppenlatz/Indic of Portland, 8-3.
Chan/Thomas: Now playing at #2 doubles is the team of Kelly Chan and Laura Thomas. They debuted last week and won both matches. Friday they defeated Spirta/Botkova of UTEP, 8-3, and on Saturday they rallied to beat Tanabe/Tyson of Portland, 9-7. On Saturday, the pair trailed 6-0 and 7-1 before rebounding to come away with the rousing 9-7 victory. The two played three doubles matches together at the CS Fullerton Tournament in the fall and finished with a 1-2 ledger.
Argumedo/Carroll: The new #3 doubles team is Claudia Argumedo and Alanah Carroll. They also saw their first duty as a team this past weekend. On Friday they fell to Bjorklund/Furdyna of UTEP, 8-6, but they rebounded nicely on Saturday to win 8-0 over Portland's pair of Menke/Ring-Marrinson.
