March 22, 2003 LONG BEACH, CA -- Long Beach State, ranked #74 in the country, swept its second straight non-conference opponent as they defeated the University of Portland, 7-0, on Saturday afternoon at the 49er Campus Courts. Friday, The Beach swept UTEP, 7-0. The 49ers improve to 9-5 with the win while Portland falls to 5-10.
The best match of the day came at #2 doubles as the 49er duo of Laura Thomas and Kelly Chan came back from deficits of 6-0 and 7-1 to win the match 9-7 over Kaori Tanabe and Alyson Tyson. At #1 doubles, Alena Kovalchuk and Lindsey Marvel won 8-3 over Amy Juppenlatz and Sanja Indic, while at the #3 spot, Alanah Carroll and Claudia Argumedo routed Kelle Menke and Dierdre Ring-Marrinson by an 8-0 count.
In singles, the 49ers won all six matches in straight sets. Kovalchuk improved to 7-0 this spring with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Juppenlatz. Thomas won at #2, 6-2, 6-4 over Tanabe and Marvel easily won at the #3 spot, 6-1, 6-1, over Indic. Argumedo won her fourth straight singles match with a 6-1, 6-1 win at #4 over Tyson and Chan won for the sixth time in her last seven matches with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Menke at #5. Carroll, a true freshman, ran her singles winning streak to nine with a 6-0, 6-2 win at #6 singles over Ring-Marrinson.
The 49ers will next be in action on Thursday, March 27, when they host nationally-ranked Boise State at 2:00 pm at the 49er Campus Courts.
