LONG BEACH, CA -- The 49er women's tennis team improved to 8-5 on the season with a 7-0 win over Texas-El Paso on Friday afternoon on the 49er Campus Courts. UTEP falls to 2-8 with the loss.
Long Beach got off on the right foot by winning two of the three doubles matches, earning the doubles point. Alena Kovalchuk and Lindsey Marvel won at #1 doubles, 8-3, over Kendall Exelby and Martina Rezar. At #2 doubles, Laura Thomas and Kelly Chan downed UTEP's Tea Spirta and Adi Botkova, 8-3. UTEP won at #3 doubles as Elise Bjorklund and JoJo Furdyra downed the 49ers Alanah Carroll and Claudia Argumedo, 8-6.
In singles play the 49ers won all six singles matches in straight sets. Kovalchuk defeated Exelby at #1 singles, 6-4, 6-2, to improve to 6-0 in singles this season. Thomas won at the #2 spot, 6-1, 6-3, over Rezar and Marvel prevailed at #3, 6-0, 6-1 over Spirta. Argumedo won her fourth consecutive match, defeating Furdyra at #4 singles, 6-3, 6-2 and Chan won at #5, 6-4, 6-1 over Bjorklund. Carroll continued her dominating play at the #6 spot as she defeated Batkova 6-3, 6-3, Carroll has won her last eight singles matches.
The 49ers will next be in action on Saturday, March 22, when they host Portland at 11:00 am.
