USC Wins Physical Match with 49ers Trojans Snap Beach's School-Record Six-Game Win Streak
LOS ANGELES, CA-- No. 3-ranked Southern California (8-1, 4-0 MPSF) wrestled its way to a 9-4 victory over No. 4-ranked Long Beach State (9-2, 3-1 MPSF), snapping the 49ers school-record six-game win streak in the process. Both teams entered the game in first place in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
"I thought we outplayed them, but could not get it done," said Head Coach Ricardo Azevedo, who's team was 1-for-10 on 6-on-5 power play opportunites. "I think we were better tactically, but I think our team was more surprised, than intimiated, by how physical the game became. When you have eight ripped suits, it is more of a wrestling match, than a water polo match."
Roberta Stewart led the 49ers with three goals, while Angelica Garcia added another. The Beach had closed to 5-2 near the end of the second period and 6-3 just after the break. USC edged the 49ers 3-2 in the second half, after leading 6-2 at halftime. Bri Hawkins had six saves in the net.
